STORY: American Marco Andretti went fastest on day one of qualifying Saturday (August 15) for next weekend's Indy 500 with Fernando Alonso managing just 26th as the Spaniard tries again for the elusive Brickyard win.

Marco, grandson of racing great Mario Andretti, completed his four qualifying laps with an average speed of 231.351 miles per hour (372.613 kph) to top the timesheets and move on to Sunday's (August 16) Fast 9 shootout that will determine the final starting order for the first three rows.

Alonso, chasing the final trophy of motor racing's Triple Crown, finished his four laps with an average speed of 228.768 mph (368.166 kph) but was already guaranteed a spot in this year's race with just 33 cars qualifying for the 33 car field.

The surprise of the day went to 19-year-old Dutch born racer and Indy rookie, Rinus VeeKay, who was the fastest Chevrolet powered driver with his average speed of 231.114 mph (372.941 kph), good enough for sixth fastest and a spot in the Fast 9.
