SOFTBALL

Firestone 21, Buchtel 0

The Falcons topped the Griffins in five innings at Patterson Park to give coach Jill Williams her 500th career win as a varsity coach.

Williams started her softball head coaching career at Kenmore (four seasons) and had stints at Firestone (three seasons) and Sandy Valley (22 seasons). She was an assistant at Canton McKinley the past three seasons before returning to Firestone prior to this season. She graduated from Ellet High School (1978) and the University of Akron (1983).

"I am very honored and humbled," Williams said. "You think about the wins, but the wins is never why I have done this. To me, it is not about the wins. It is about the people that you have met along the way. There have been some really great people that I have met along the way. Sandy Valley was like a home for me. They greeted me when I had lost my teaching job [because Akron Public Schools made staff cuts in the mid 1990s]. They backed me for so many years and we continued to grow the program and grow the facility and gave great opportunities for kids.

"Getting back into it here at Firestone is fun and exciting. I thought there was something more that I could give."

Firestone's Madison Dies and Katie Emery combined to pitch a no-hitter and strike out 13. Dies also hit two doubles and a single, batted in four runs and scored three runs.

Firestone's other key hitters were Jalynn Milini (two hits, four RBIs, four runs); Anna Morrow (three hits, three RBIs, two runs); Katie Morehouse (hit, three RBIs) and Diamond Jones (two hits, three runs).

Archbishop Hoban 8, St. Vincent-St. Mary 2

Taylor Gerring hit two triples and a single, had four RBIs and scored a run to lead the host Knights (11-4) to a win over the Irish (3-6).

Hoban's Nylah Durham (three hits, RBI); Lacie Quarles (two hits, two runs, RBI); Sydney Conti (two hits) and Mackenzie Wood (hit, two runs) also played key roles.

"I was proud of the way we battled back from an early 2-0 deficit," Hoban coach Kevin Yun said. "St. Vincent-St. Mary had a lot of energy and I challenged our girls to respond and they did. We tied it 2-2 and then took a 5-2 lead and eventually closed it out 8-2. We were well aware that St. V would not give up, as we witnessed them come back from an 8-1 deficit to win a game against GlenOak over the weekend.

"I thought Faith Porter did a great job hitting her spots against a good hitting St. V team. Our defense made plays behind her, especially Lacie Quarles in centerfield. She really covered some ground tonight."

STVM's Reagan Zajac had two hits and two runs batted in.
