Netflix has shared a glimpse of Andrew Scott as elusive conman Tom Ripley in the teaser for the upcoming adaptation of Patricia Highsmith's novel.

Based on the author's 1955 book The Talented Mr Ripley, limited series Ripley will be coming to the streamer on April 4.

Trading the vivid, warmer hues of the 1999 film adaptation for a stunning black and white photography, the eight-episode show follows Scott's scammer scraping by in early 1960s New York.

There, he's hired by a wealthy man to travel to Italy and convince his errant son Dickie Greenleaf to return home and take care of the family business.

A taste of Dickie's opulent life in the idyllic Mongibello proves to be addictive for Tom, who's sent down a spiral of deceit, fraud, darkness, and murder.

Created by The Night Of's Steven Zaillian, who has an Academy Award and several other accolades under his belt for the script of Schindler's List, the series also stars Johnny Flynn (Beast, Emma) as Dickie and Dakota Fanning (The Alienist) as Marge Sherwood.

The teaser, shared by Netflix on its social channels today (January 22), includes several ominous shots of Scott's Ripley as he lies his way into Dickie's dolce vita, while police from both sides of the Atlantic are trying to track him down.

With the walls closing in around Ripley, he's willing to go to great lengths to ensure his stay in Italy gets prolonged indefinitely, as proved by a shot of the infamous glass ashtray that Highsmith readers will be familiar with.

Ripley will be available to stream on Netflix on April 4.
