Gerard Butler's Secret Service agent Mike Banning is back once again in the new official trailer for Angel Has Fallen – only this time, he's the one being hunted.

After previously successfully saving the presidency and the British PM in previous films, the threequel sees Banning himself fall under suspicion when there's an assassination attempt on US President Allan Trumbull (Morgan Freeman).

He's wrongfully accused and taken into custody, but this is Banning we're talking about and he soon escapes from capture, becoming a man on the run as he's forced to outsmart the FBI and figure out who really wants to kill the President – and convince the world that he's been blamed.

"The President's not safe, they're gonna try and finish the job," Banning says at one point. "I am not going to stop until I find out who did this."

Shot Caller director Ric Roman Waugh takes the helm for Angel Has Fallen, while Jada Pinkett Smith and Nick Nolte join the cast of the film which also stars Piper Perabo and Lance Reddick.

Speaking of the film's move to focusing on Banning this time, Butler revealed he thinks it makes the movie "very moving and profound".

"It's a chance to be involved with some more serious drama, some more subtle performance, and take a more inward journey amidst all the craziness and the action," he told Entertainment Weekly.

"It was great to examine these characters and make it very moving and profound and touching and relatable. I think this movie is very relatable without having to blow up the White House and Big Ben."

Angel Has Fallen will be released on August 23 in the US and the UK.
