Angela Bassett to receive Creative Impact in Acting honor at Palm Springs film fest

Academy Award nominee and "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" star Angela Bassett will receive the Creative Impact in Acting Award from Variety at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

She will receive the award as part of the annual 10 Directors to Watch brunch on Jan. 6 at the Parker Palm Springs. The Palm Springs International Film Festival runs through Jan. 16, with the Film Awards taking place Jan. 5.

Bassett is an actress, director and executive producer known for her captivating and emotional performances in films such as "Malcolm X," "Boyz n the Hood," "Waiting to Exhale," "How Stella Got Her Groove Back" and "What's Love Got to Do With It," for which she won a Golden Globe Award and received an Academy Award nomination for her performance as singer Tina Turner. She has since made star turns in Marvel's "Black Panther" and "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," in which she plays Queen Ramonda of the fictional African country Wakanda.

For her performance in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," she received a Golden Globe nomination and a Critics Choice Award nomination for best supporting actress.

Other recent projects include "Soul," "Otherhood," "Gunpowder Milkshake" and "The Flood," for which she received an Emmy nomination for outstanding narrator. She has also received Emmy nominations for her work on the anthology series "American Horror Story," "A Black Lady Sketch Show" and "The Imagineering Story." Bassett recently wrapped production on a Netflix film, "Damsel," opposite "Stranger Things" actress Millie Bobby Brown.

“Few actresses have stepped into so many iconic roles, from rock queen Tina Turner to Malcolm X’s widow Betty Shabazz to Queen Ramonda to Coretta Scott King, and emerged triumphant from all of them,” Variety’s EVP of content Steven Gaydos said in a statement. “In the three decades since Angela Bassett’s Oscar-nominated turn in 'What’s Love Got to Do With It,' the versatile actor has balanced deep humanity with regal grace and heroic strength, all qualities essential to her work in the global film phenomenon that is 'Wakanda Forever.'"

Past recipients of the Creative Impact in Acting Award include Javier Bardem, Emily Blunt, Steve Carell and Robert De Niro. The award celebrates Bassett’s body of work.

Variety previously announced that Baz Luhrmann will receive the Creative Impact in Directing Award and Rian Johnson will receive the Creative Impact in Screenwriting Award at its 10 Directors to Watch event.

Filmmakers who will receive honors at the Palm Springs International Film Awards include: Cate Blanchett (Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress), Austin Butler (Breakthrough Performance Award, Actor), Viola Davis (Chairman’s Award), Danielle Deadwyler (Breakthrough Performance Award, Actress), Colin Farrell (Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actor), Bill Nighy (International Star Award, Actor), Sarah Polley (Director of the Year Award), Michelle Yeoh (International Star Award) and The Fabelmans (Vanguard Award).
