Angela Merkel and King Felipe arrive at Yuste monastery
The prize is awarded by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation and is given to those individuals, organizations, projects or initiatives who "have contributed to the general understanding and appreciation of the cultural,
scientific values, historians of Europe, as well as the process of unification of the European Community".
Merkel and King Felipe were greeted by flag waving fans and took their time to greet many of them before walking into the monastery.
Later they posed for pictures with Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and took a walk through the monastery.
