Angelo State Update: Women's basketball finishes regular season with win vs. UTPB

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

ANGELO STATE 71, UT PERMIAN BASIN 55

SAN ANGELO, Texas — After a solid performance on both ends, the Angelo State women's basketball team downed UT Permain Basin 71-55 in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena on Thursday.

The Rambelles finished the regular season 22-6 overall and 17-5 in Lone Star Conference play and now await Saturday results for seeding for the LSC tournament. The Falcons finish the regular season 13-15 and 10-12 in conference action.

Madeline Stephens led the way for the Rambelles with 18 points on an efficient 5 of 8 shooting including 6 of 6 from the free throw line to go along with seven rebounds.

RAMBELLES NO. 2 SEED AT LSC TOURNEY

After the final slate of regular season games concluded, the Angelo State women's basketball team grabbed a share of the LSC West Division title and the number two overall seed in the Lone Star Conference tournament.

The Rambelles and Lubbock Christian shared the West Division title after both going 11-3. The Rambelles earn the two seed based on the tiebreaker policy with two wins over the Lady Chaps.

As the two seed, the Rambelles will face seven seed Cameron, who is the only LSC school that swept the Blue and Gold during the regular season. The game is set for 2:30 p.m. March 2 at the Comerica Center in Frisco.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

ANGELO STATE 61, UT PERMIAN BASIN 59

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The Angelo State men's basketball team wrapped up its regular season with a 61-59 victory against UT Permian Basin on Thursday.

The Rams conclude the regular season with a 23-5 record and a 19-3 record in conference play. The Rams also finish the season undefeated at home with a 13-0 record.

For the game, the Rams held the Falcons to 12.5% shooting from 3-point range and forced the Rams into 15 turnovers.

Kevon Godwin and Willie Guy led the Rams with 13 points each and recorded three assists. Additionally, Guy shot 4-for-5 from the field and converted all three of his 3-point attempts.

Devaughn Thomas scored 11 points and grabbed four rebounds, and Fredelin De La Cruz scored seven points and grabbed five rebounds and four steals.

RAMS NO. 3 SEED AT LSC TOURNEY

The Angelo State men's basketball team will be the third seed in next week's Lone Star Conference Tournament.

The Rams will take on Dallas Baptist in the tournament's opening round, scheduled for noon March 3 at the Comerica Center in Frisco.

BASEBALL

UT TYLER 3, ANGELO STATE 2

TYLER, Texas —The No. 2-ranked Angelo State baseball team fell in game one of the series against UT Tyler, losing 3-2 in extra innings on Friday at Irvin Field. With the loss, the Rams fell to 11-2 overall and in Lone Star Conference play while the Patriots improve to 9-4. Aaron Munson started on the mound for the Rams, throwing seven innings, allowing with eight hits and two earned runs while striking out five.

Austin Teel tossed 3.1 innings for ASU, giving up one hit with six strikeouts and no runs. In the 13th inning, the Patriots finally broke the tie, hitting a solo home run to left field to close the game.

ANGELO STATE 4-1, UT-TYLER 0-1

TYLER, Texas — The No. 2-ranked Angelo State baseball team split Saturday's doubleheader against UT Tyler, winning game one 4-0 before falling 2-1 in game two at Irwin Field. With the split, the Rams are now 12-3 overall and in the Lone Star Conference.

ANGELO STATE 10, UT TYLER 6

TYLER, Texas — The No. 2-ranked Angelo State baseball team split the series against UT Tyler, winning game four 10-6 on Sunday at Irwin Field.

With the win, the Rams improve to 13-3 overall.

Mason Bryant started on the mound for the Rams, throwing 4.1 innings with five strikeouts and allowing six hits. Scott Ellis pitched 4.2 innings in relief, picking up the win after allowing two hits and one run.

WILLIAMS SELECTED AS LSC HITTER OF THE WEEK

SAN ANGELO, Texas – After leading the third-ranked Angelo State baseball team to a series win over UT Permian Basin, Jordan Williams has been named the Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week. Williams, a junior Business major from Round Rock, Texas, set the all-time career hit record for Angelo State, racking up eight hits to bring his career total to 250. He batted .533 over the weekend with seven RBIs and two home runs with a slugging percentage of 1.000.

SOFTBALL

ANGELO STATE 10, UTPB 3

Odessa, Texas — The Angelo State softball team rebounded from its opening weekend of Lone Star Conference action with a 10-3 win against UT Permian Basin on Tuesday.

The Rambelles' 10 runs are their most in a single game this season, while their 13 hits tied a season-best. Additionally, 10 of their 13 hits came from spots 5-9 in the lineup. The win sees the Rambelles improve to 9-6 on the season and 1-3 in LSC play.

ANGELO STATE 3-14; UTPB 4-0

ODESSA, Texas — The Angelo State softball team claimed its first LSC series of the season, winning two of three games from UT Permian Basin.

The Falcons came back to win the first game on Thursday, but then the Rambelles rebounded for a 14-0 victory in victory innings.

Ashton McMillan went 4-for-4 in the second game with four RBI and three runs scored. Genesis Armendariz picked up her sixth win of the season, allowing two hits and a walk while striking out six Falcons.

The Rambelles are 10-7 on the season.

ANGELO STATE 0-3, UT TYLER 7-2

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The Angelo State softball team relied on clutch hitting from Maleya Burns and Paxton Scheurer in game two to force a split in their doubleheader with second-ranked UT Tyler at Mayer Field on Saturday. The Patriots took game one 7-0 before the Rambelles held on for a 3-2 victory.

ANGELO STATE 3, UT TYLER 2

SAN ANGELO, Texas — On Sunday at Mayer Field, the Angelo State softball team took a 3-2 victory over second-ranked UT Tyler for the second game, with this win coming courtesy of an eighth-inning walk-off by senior Maleya Burns.

The Rambelles improved to 12-8 on the season and 4-5 in conference play.

TRACK & FIELD

BOSTON — The Angelo State men's track & field team competed in two events in the Last Chance Indoor Qualifier at Boston University, setting a new NCAA Division II record while collecting two provisional marks.

Coming off a Lone Star Conference championship in the event, Oussama Elbouchayby set a NCAA Division II record in the 800-meter run, finishing in 1 minute, 47.11 seconds, .23 seconds faster than the previous record set in 2012.

The Rams 1,600-meter relay team also earned a provisional mark as Emmett Seals Jr., Charles Frimpong, Bossman Pinkrah, and Elbouchayby combined for a time of 3:11.67 to earn third place and the sixth fastest time in Division II this season.
