Angelo State Update: Rambelles, Rams earn spots in the LSC tourney championship games

LSC TOURNAMENT

SEMIFINALS: ANGELO STATE 61, TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE 57

FRISCO, Texas The Angelo State men's basketball started hot held on late against second-seeded Texas A&M-Kingsville to defeat the Javelinas 61-57 and advance to the Lone Star Conference Championship game.

Devaughn Thomas led all players with 20 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe.

Kevon Godwin added 13 points, making three 3-pointers and assisting three times.

Fredelin De La Cruz recorded a double-double with 12 points and ten rebounds; defensively, he grabbed three steals. This is his sixth double-double of the season.

The win sees the Rams improve to 25-5

FIRST ROUND: ANGELO STATE 64, DBU 43

Frisco, Texas — The Angelo State men's basketball team dominated DBU in the opening game of the Lone Star Conference men's basketball tournament, prevailing 64-43 over the Patriots inside the Comerica Center on Friday.

It is the Rams' first LSC Tournament quarterfinal win since March 6th, 2019.

The Rams shot 44.4% from the field and held the Patriots to six made field goals in the first half, as DBU shot 27.3% from the field.

The Rams dominated the boards in the first half, out-rebounding the Patriots 22-9.

LSC TOURNAMENT

SEMIFINALS: ANGELO STATE 62, UT TYLER 53

FRISCO, Texas — At the conclusion of a tightly contested matchup, the Angelo State women's basketball team defeated UT Tyler, 62-53 Saturday, earning a spot in the Lone Star Conference Tournament Championship game. The Rambelles improve to 24-6 and are heading to their first LSC Tournament final appearance since the 2018-19 season, seeking their first championship since 2015-16.

Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant led all scorers with 16 points, while also pulling down eight rebounds.

Madeline Stephens earned her eighth double-double of the year and second straight after posting 12 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four assists.

Sawyer Lloyd also earned a double-double, her eighth, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds, playing all 40 minutes.

Landry Morrow had a big day as well with 12 points, seven rebounds, and two assists.

FIRST ROUND: ANGELO STATE 70, CAMERON 62

FRISCO, Texas — The Angelo State women's basketball team opened the Lone Star Conference Tournament with a 70-62 victory against Cameron after shooting 46% from the field and 91% from the free throw line Thursday.

The Rambelles improve to 23-6 on the season and advance to the semi-finals in the Lone Star Conference tournament.Sawyer Lloyd led all scorers with 23 points, she was one assist away from her first career triple-double as she finished with 14 rebounds and nine assists. Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant earned double-double number 11 on the year as she posted 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Madeline Stephens rounded out the big three with a double-double of her own, also posting 16 points to go along with 10 boards.

LLOYD EARNS TWO SUPERLATIVE AWARDS FOR RAMBELLES

FRISCO, Texas — After a second-place finish in the Lone Star Conference, the Angelo State women's basketball team earned six conference awards highlighted by Sawyer Lloyd's Academic and Defensive Player of the Year nods, the conference announced Wednesday. Lloyd was named the Academic Player of the Year after finishing the season ranking top 10 in multiple statistical categories all while finishing an undergrad degree in Exercise Science and beginning her master's in Coaching, Sport, Recreation, and Fitness Administration. Lloyd finished fifth in scoring, averaging 15.5 points a game and held the best assist/turnover ratio in the conference at 2.2.

Lloyd earned Defensive Player of the Year recognition as well after leading the conference with 80 steals, averaging 2.9 a game. The junior guard also pulled in 7.7 rebounds per contest, ranking ninth best in the LSC.

Lloyd was also named to the First Team All-LSC and was joined by forward Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant. Madeline Stephens earned a Second Team All-LSC nod after averaging 13.6 points a game on 49.3% shooting.

Landry Morrow rounded out the awards with her selection to the LSC All-Freshman team.

MCGHEE-PLEASANT EARNS LSC DEFENSIVE HONOR

RICHARDSON, Texas — On the heels of a stifling defensive performance in the one game last week, Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant was named the Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday.

The Rambelles held UT Permian Basin to their third worst shooting performance of the season, making 27.9% of their shots on 19-of-68 shooting. McGhee-Pleasant led the way with a double-double that included 14 points and 10 rebounds. The junior Kinesiology major was a force in the paint with three blocks.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

WEBB, PATEL HEADLINE ALL-LSC HONORS FOR RAMS

Frisco, Texas — The conference announced all-conference honorees Wednesday and the Rams received six all-conference honors, with head coach Vinay Patel being named the Co-Coach of the Year and Steve Webb being named the Defensive Player of the Year headlining the honors for the Rams.

Additionally, Kevon Godwin earned all-LSC first-team honors, and Wille Guy and Fredelin De La Cruz were named to the second team.

BASEBALL

RAMS ROLL BY UAFS TO START SERIES

SAN ANGELO, Texas —The third-ranked Angelo State baseball team opened the series against UAFS with a seven-inning victory, downing the Lions 15-2 at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium on Friday.

With the win, the Rams improve to 14-3 overall and in Lone Star Conference play. Tonight's win was the 700th victory for head coach Kevin Brooks in his time at ASU.

RAMS SWEEP DOUBLEHEADER

SAN ANGELO, Texas —The third-ranked Angelo State baseball team swept Saturday's doubleheader against UAFS, winning 16-1, and 6-0 at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium. With the pair of victories, the Rams improve to 16-3 overall on the year and in Lone Star Conference play.

RAMS COMPLETE SWEEP OF UAFS ON SUNDAY

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The third-ranked Angelo State baseball team completed the four-game sweep of UAFS on Sunday, winning 21-11 in seven innings at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium. The Rams are 17-3 on the season and have recorded three sweeps out of five weekends.

Mason Bryant picked up his third win of the season for the Rams, throwing 4.1 innings with five runs off five six hits and nine strikeouts.

Hunter Mayo threw 2.1 innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits while collecting four strikeouts.

Tripp Clark finished with four RBI followed by three from Austin Beck and Reese Johnson. Jacob Guerrero was 5 for 5 at the plate, scoring all five times.

SOFTBALL

RAMBELLS TOP MIDWESTERN STATE

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — A combination of four home runs, including two off the bat of true freshman Tatiana Trotter, as well as a one-run, one-hit performance from Genesis Armendariz inside the circle, allowed the Angelo State softball team to claim a 10-1 run-rule victory over Midwestern State on Friday.

The Rambelles recorded at least one run in all five innings at the plate, including a five-run third inning.

RAMSBELLES SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER WITH MIDWESTERN

WICHITA FALLS, Texas — The Angelo State softball team's doubleheader against Midwestern State saw the Rambelles claim game one 10-1 in a five-inning run-rule before the Mustangs took the second game 9-8.

Maleya Burns finished the first game 3-for-3 from the plate, scoring two runs and driving in five; it is the second-straight game the Rambelles have had a player record five RBI.

Ashlyn Lerma finished the game 2-for-4 from the leadoff spot with three stolen bases.

Torrey Hogan collected her fourth win of the season, allowing two hits and three walks while striking out six in four innings. In relief, Cheyenne Floyd pitched the final inning, recording all three of her out via the strikeout.

The Mustangs scored three runs in the first and second innings to jump to a 6-1 lead in the second game.

Ashton McMillan led the team with a 3-for-4 effort that included a double, and Lindsey Evans went 2-for-4 and Martinez went 2-for-3.

The Rambelles are 14-9 on the season and 6-6 in conference play.

LERMA NAMED LSC HITTER OF THE WEEK

Richardson, Texas — Coming off a week in which the Angelo State softball team won two conference series, including two wins over No. 2 UT Tyler, Rambelles' senior second baseman Ashlyn Lerma has been honored as the Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week, the conference announced Monday.

Over the six games against UT Permian Basin and the Patriots, Lerma hit .462, with three of her six hits going for extra bases. Lerma drew seven walks, scored four runs, stole eight bases, and recorded at least one hit in five of her six games this week.

On the season, Lerma is hitting .453 and has a .603 on-base percentage. She has drawn 20 walks, the most in the LSC, and has stolen 28 bases, which leads the country.
