Rams' Godwin earns NABC All-Region honor

ROLLA, Missouri Angelo State junior guard Kevon Godwin was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-South Central Region Second Team, the organization announced Monday.

Godwin returned to the court for the Rams after a season in which he redshirted due to a knee injury. Godwin scored 16.9 points a game, third in the LSC. He also led the conference in 3-point shooting, shooting 40% from 3-point range, and averaging 2.4 threes a game.

He also shot 45.7% from the field, ninth in the LSC, despite having taken the second-most shots in the conference this season, and in his first season back from injury, he has played 1,023 minutes, sixth-most in the conference.

Godwin's production led the Rams to a 26-7 record, including going 19-3 in Lone Star Conference play; the Rams made the LSC Tournament finals and won their first NCAA postseason game since 2016.

BASEBALL

Angelo State 18, Lubbock Christian 7

LUBBOCK, Texas — The third-ranked Angelo State baseball team earned a series sweep against Lubbock Christian on Sunday, defeating the Chaps 18-7 in Game 4 at Hays Field.

The Rams improved to 30-4 overall and 28-4 in Lone Star Conference play, picking up their fifth sweep of the season.

The Rams pulled ahead in the fourth, collecting six runs to go up 9-2.

The Rams will have next weekend off, returning to action on April 6 against Texas A&M International at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

Angelo State 5-20, Lubbock Christian 0-6

LUBBOCK, Texas — The third-ranked Angelo State baseball team swept Saturday's doubleheader against Lubbock Christian, winning Game 1 5-0 and won Game 2 20-6 at Hays Field.

The Rams improve to 29-4 overall on the year and 27-4 in Lone Star Conference action.

Kade Bragg continued his dominant season on the mound for the Rams after shutting out the Chaps while allowing one hit through seven innings. He collected eight strikeouts with one walk to improve to 8-0 on the season.

Rams reliever Jackson Haga tallied his first victory of the season, striking out five through 0.2 innings.

The Rams broke away in the fifth inning, scoring six runs starting with a two-RBI double by Reese Johnson.

Tripp Clark finished with a team-high three hits while Sands, Guerrero, and Cain each had three RBIs.

Angelo State 14, Lubbock Christian 13, 11 inn.

LUBBOCK, Texas — The first game of the series between Angelo State and Lubbock Christian saw the third-ranked Rams fall behind but then come back to a 14-13 win in 11 innings.

The win is the first for the Rams in extra innings since they beat St. Edward's in 10 innings on April 1st of last season.

Austin Beck led off the ninth inning with a home run down the left-field line to tie the game at 13l; the Rams loaded the bases in the 11th inning, scoring the winning run on a Jordan Williams sacrifice fly.

Williams went 3-for-6 from the plate while Tripp Clark, Thomas Cain, Kamden Kelton, Beck, and Jacob Guerrero each recorded two hits.

Scott Ellis earned his fourth win this season, throwing the final 4.2 innings for the Rams. Ellis held the Chaps to two hits, two walks, and no runs.

The Rams improve to 27-4 on the season and 25-4 in LSC play.

SOFTBALL

St. Mary's 3, Angelo State 0

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The Angelo State softball team dropped their series finale against St. Mary's on Sunday at Mayer Field, 3-0.

Three RBI singles by the Rattlers – two in the fourth inning and one in the fifth – proved to be the difference in the contest, which saw the Rambelles finish with five hits.

Keilei Garcia was the only Rambelle to tally a multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 from the plate, while Ashton McMillan, Lindsey Evans, and Ashton Dirner each collected one hit.

The Rambelles are now 22-16 on the season and 14-13 in conference play.

Angelo State 8-0, St. Mary's 0-13

SAN ANGELO — The Angelo State softball team experienced both ends of the run-rule spectrum on Saturday afternoon at Mayer Field against St. Mary’s.

The Rambelles won the first game 8-0 but the Rattlers rebounded to win Game 2 13-0.

Angelo State pitcher Genesis Armendariz earned her 13th win of the season. The junior surrendered a one hit and three walks and two strikeouts.

The Rattles scored two early runs and then used the momentum from there to split the doubleheader.

The Rambelles are 22-15 on the season and 14-12 in conference play.

Texas A&M-Kingsville 11-1, Angelo State 3-0

Kingsville, Texas — The Angelo State softball team dropped two games doubleheader Tuesday to Texas A&M-Kingsville, losing 11-3 in a run-rule before dropping game two 1-0.

The Javelinas dominated game one, scoring three runs in the first inning and four in the second to jump to a 7-0 lead.

The only Rambelles in game one to tally hits were Ashlyn Lerma, Paxton Scheurer, and Ashton McMillan.

Lerma went 3-for-3 from the plate while McMillan went 2-for-3, and Scheurer hit a three-run home run, her tenth of the season.

The Rambelles mustered five hits in game two, with Lerma, McMillan, Scheurer, Bailey Martinez, and Ashton Dirner each collecting a hit.

Genesis Armendariz pitched a complete game, giving up three hits and three walks.

The Rambelles are 20-14 on the season and 12-11 in conference play.

Angelo State 2, Texas A&M-Kingsville 1

KINGSVILLE, Texas — The Angelo State softball team avoided a sweep at Texas A&M-Kingsville, bouncing back from two losses to defeat the Javelinas 2-1 on Wednesday.

Ashlyn Lerma led off the fifth inning by reaching on a Javelina error before stealing second. Paxton Scheurer drew a walk to set up Bailey Martinez, whose single down the left field line scored Lerma and gave the Rambelles the 2-1 lead.

Having driven in the winning run, Martinez sealed the victory defensively for the Rambelles in the seventh. With runners on first and second and one out, Kayla Gonzales lined to Martinez, who secured the ball before tagging out the runner at first to end the game on an unassisted double play.

Ashton McMillan and Martinez each collected two hits for the Rambelles as the top six hitters in the lineup tallied at least one hit.

Cheyenne Floyd earned the win, striking out nine while scattering six walks and four hits on one run. Genesis Armendariz pitched the final 0.2 innings in relief.

The Rambelles improve to 21-14 on the season and 13-11 in conference play.

TRACK AND FIELD

Angelo State squads compete at Masked Rider Open

LUBBOCK, Texas — The Angelo State track & field teams wrapped up competition at the Masked Rider Open hosted by Texas Tech this past weekend.

The Rambelles collected three provisional marks in the 400-meter run as Shadae Findley finished third (53.31 seconds) followed by Shiean Walters in fourth (53.80) and Zykia McDaniel in seventh (54.83).

Findley, Walters, McDaniel, and Maricia Spence also combined for a provisional time in the 1,600-meter relay, taking first overall with a time of 3:38.98 which leads Division II.

On the men's side, Cason Brown improved on his NCAA best in the discus, throwing a mark of 54.21m (177-10) to take fifth overall and earn the top finish in Division II.

Findley, Spence earn LSC honors

RICHARDSON, Texas — The Angelo State women's track and field team saw two athletes — Shadae Findley and Maricia Spence — earn Lone Star Conference weekly honors, with Findley being named the Track Athlete of the Week while Spence earned Field Athlete of the Week honors, the conference announced Wednesday.

This past weekend at the Wes Kittley Invitational, Findley won the 800-meter dash with a time of 2 minutes, 13.96 seconds; the time is the fastest mark in the conference and is sixth in Division II.

Spence won the javelin throw with a personal-best mark of 132-3 (40.30m) and helped Angelo State's 400-meter relay team to the gold with a time of 46.75.
