Angelo State sinks Lady Chaps on shot at buzzer

SAN ANGELO —Tayjanna McGhee-Pleasant made a tiebreaking basket as time ran out, lifting Angelo State over Lubbock Christian University 53-51 Saturday in Lone Star Conference women's basketball.

McGhee-Pleasant, a 6-foot-3 junior from Amarillo Tascosa, finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. She was in the edge of the lane near the free-throw line when she took a pass from Landry Morrow, then stepped back from defender Grace Foster and made the game-winning shot from 16 feet.

Monterey graduate Madeline Stephens scored 18 points for Angelo State (13-2, 8-1), which won its seventh game in a row and moved to 6-0 at home this season. Stephens also grabbed nine rebounds.

Junior guard Audrey Robertson had 18 points, a career-high 12 rebounds and three steals for LCU (11-5, 6-2), which lost for the first time in five games. Shaylee Stovall was next with 12 points, and Foster had eight points and seven rebounds.

Foster tied the game at 51 on a layup with nine seconds left.

LCU twice led by nine points in the third quarter. The lead changed hands three times late in the game. McGhee Pleasant's 3-point goal moved Angelo State in front 48-46 with 2:38 left, and Stovall answered with a 3 that gave LCU the lead with 1:37 to go.

The Rambelles' Briley Merket scored in the paint, making it 50-49 at the 1:21 mark.

SAN ANGELO — Kevon Godwin scored 18 points and Angelo State downed Lubbock Christian University in a Lone Star Conference West Division game.

Reggie Quezada and Devaughn Thomas scored 16 and 15 points, respectively, for Angelo State (11-3, 7-1), which opened up a 37-21 lead late in the first half with an 18-2 run.

Rowan Mackenzie scored 30 points for LCU (9-5, 5-3), the third time this season the 6-3 junior from Australia has scored at least 30. The Chaparrals got 14 points from Russell Harrison and eight points and six assists from Najeeb Muhammad, but no other player scored more than five.

LCU shot just below 40 percent from the field and went 7 of 31 from 3-point range.

The Rams led by 16 points twice in the second half. The closest the Chaps came after that was 53-47 when Mackenzie made two free throws with 8:46 left and 68-62 on two free throws by Muhammad at the 2:18 mark.

PLAINVIEW — Jenna Cooper-Jackson lit it up for 31 points, topping 30 for the second time this season, and Wayland Baptist beat Oklahoma City University in Sooner Athletic Conference action at Hutcherson Center.

Cooper-Jackson had nine assists and seven rebounds.

Kaitlyn Edgemon added 15 points and seven rebounds for Wayland (10-5, 6-3). Taylor Houston had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The Flying Queens shot better than 54 percent from the field and made 12 of 24 3-point attempts.

Annilia Dawn scored 20 points for Oklahoma City (6-8, 3-6).

PLAINVIEW — Cori Guest shot 7 of 9 from 3-point range on the way to a season-high 31 points and Oklahoma City University upended No. 22 Wayland Baptist in an SAC game, dealing the Pioneers their fourth loss in seven games.

Dravon Clayborn, Avery Jackson and Brandon Jackson scored 15, 14 and 10 points, respectively, for the Stars (7-8, 5-4), who won for only the second time in seven road games this season.

D'Michael Bellfield, coming off a career-high 31-point night in a win Thursday over John Brown, again led Wayland (10-5, 5-4) with 21. Parrish Hewitt scored 18 points for the Pioneers, Tedrick Wolfe 11 and R.J. Mason 10.

Wayland, down 17 points early in the second half, closed to 84-82 on a 3-point goal by Mason with 28 seconds left. After that, Guest and Brandon Jackson made two free throws apiece to close it out.

Blinn women 64

South Plains 57

BRENHAM — South Plains College got 15 points from Celia Sumbane, but lost its last non-conference game of the regular season Saturday at fifth-ranked Blinn College.

Blinn (12-1) won its third game in a row and snapped a three-game win streak by South Plains (6-7).

Jennifer Silva scored 13 points and Matilda Soderlund nine for the Lady Texans. South Plains opens Western Junior College Athletic Conference play against Howard College at 5:45 p.m. Thursday in Big Spring.
