Angelo State Update: Rams, Rambelles earn All-American honors at national indoors

Rams, Rambelles complete strong run at NCAA D-II Indoor Nationals

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Angelo State track & field teams concluded the 2023 NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships with two top 10 finishes as the Rambelles took 10th overall and the Rams earned a ninth-place finish at the Virginia Beach Sports Complex.

The Rams and Rambelles each finished with 22 points, making it the first time both the men's and women's teams finished in the top 10 at the indoor championships.

Oussama Elbouchayby claimed the national championship in the men's 800-meter run, setting a national record with a time of 1 minute, 46.78 seconds, breaking the NCAA Division II all-time record he set two weeks ago. He also earned First-Team All-American accolades.

Shiean Walters took second overall in the women's 400-meter run with a time of 53.54 and Zykia McDaniel finished seventh at 54.93. Both athletes earned First-Team All-American honors.

The Belles' 4x400-meter relay team of Walters, McDaniel, Spence, and Shadae Findley finished second overall with a time of 3:38.31, setting a new program record while recording the second-fastest finish in NCAA Division II history.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Godwin, Web earn regional honors

DENVER, Colo. — Angelo State guards Kevon Godwin and Steve Web were named to the Division II Conference Commissioner's Association (D2CCA) All-South Central Region Second Team, the organization announced Friday.

Godwin, a junior guard from Blountstown, Florida, scored 16.9 points a game, third in the LSC. He also leads the conference in three-point shooting, shooting 40%. Godwin also shoots 45.7% from the field.

Webb, the 2023 Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Year, is a graduate transfer from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, and has spearheaded a Rams' defense that allows 65.5 points a game, fourth in the conference, and forces opponents into 15.1 turnovers a game, also fourth in the LSC.

Individually, Webb leads the conference with 1.8 steals a game. His 52 steals on the season are the most the St. Louis native has tallied in his career. He has 214 career steals and is one of five active Division II players to have 200 or more career steals.

ASU athletes earn LSC indoor honors

RICHARDSON, Texas — The Lone Star Conference announced the 2023 Track & Field Awards for the indoor season, naming Angelo State's Elvis Kryukov Outstanding Male Field Athlete of the Year and Maricia Spence earned Outstanding Female Field Athlete of the Year.

ASU also earned 15 total All-Conference honorees including 11 from the Rambelles and four from the Rams.

Competing at the LSC Indoor Championships, Kryukov, a junior Management major from Limassol, Cyprus, was the champion in heptathlon (5,450), runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles (8.01 seconds), seventh place in high jump (1.90m) and seventh place in shot put (14.90m).

Spence, a junior Economics major from Christiana, Jamaica, was champion in the pentathlon (3,862) and long jump (6.04m), runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles (8.71) and fourth place in shot put (12.94m).

BASEBALL

ANGELO STATE 10, OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN 2

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The third-ranked Angelo State baseball team scored late in Sunday's contest as the Rams completed the series sweep of Oklahoma Christian, winning game four 10-2 at Dobson Baseball Field. The Rams are now 21-3 overall and in Lone Star Conference play, sweeping their second straight series.

ANGELO STATE 9-15, OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN 2-3

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The third-ranked Angelo State baseball team swept Saturday's doubleheader against Oklahoma Christian, winning 9-2 and 15-3 to take a three-game lead in the series at Dobson Baseball Field.

The two victories move the Rams to 20-3 overall on the season and in Lone Star Conference play.

ANGELO STATE 9, OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN 3

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The third-ranked Angelo State baseball team opened the series against Oklahoma Christian with a 9-3 victory at Dobson Baseball Field on Friday. With the win, the Rams improve to 18-3 overall and in Lone Star Conference play.

Aaron Munson started on the mound for the Rams, throwing seven innings, giving up two runs off four hits while collecting a career-high 13 strikeouts. With the win, Munson improves to 4-0 on the season.

Jacob Gurrero and Thomas Cain finished with two hits each while Reese Johnson and Jordan Williams collected two RBI each on the day.

Derek Klosowski tossed two innings in relief, allowing one hit and one run with three strikeouts.

SOFTBALL

OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN 2, ANGELO STATE 1

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The Angelo State softball team fell in their series finale 2-1 against 25th-ranked Oklahoma Christian on Sunday.

Genesis Armendariz started the game in the circle, allowing five hits and two runs in 5.1 innings of work; Cheyenne Floyd pitched the final 0.2 innings in relief.

The Rambelles are 18-11 on the season and are 10-8 in conference play. Angelo State returns to action on Friday when they welcome Eastern New Mexico into Mayer Field.

ANGELO STATE 2-4, OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN 7-2

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — The Angelo State softball team split its doubleheader against No. 25 Oklahoma Christian on Saturday, falling behind early in game one and losing 7-2 before bouncing back to beat the Eagles 4-2 in nine innings in the second game. Cheyenne Floyd pitched 4.2 innings in relief, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out four in the first game.

After her performance in game one in relief, Floyd picked up the win in the second game as she pitched the final 1.2 innings, who pitched the first 7.1 innings, allowing two runs with five hits and one walk while striking out three.

Ashlyn Lerma went 5-for-5 at the plate, scoring two runs and driving in the two deciding runs. Maleya Burns and Ashton McMillan each went 2-for-4 at the plate.

ANGELO STATE 6-10, TEXAS WOMAN'S 0-0

SAN ANGELO, Texas — The Angelo State softball team secured two shutout victories over Texas Woman's on Wednesday afternoon at Mayer Field to claim their first Lone Star Conference series sweep of the season; the Rambelles won the opening game 6-0 before claiming game two 10-0 in a five-inning, run-rule victory.

The two teams combined to play 12 innings one day after the two teams opened the series with a 13-inning contest on Tuesday.

The Rambelles are now 17-9 on the season and 9-6 in conference play.

ANGELO STATE 3, TEXAS WOMAN'S 2

SAN ANGELO, Texas Angelo State defeated Texas Woman's 3-2 in a 13-inning thriler on Tuesday.

The game featured a pitchers' duel between the Pioneers' Alyssa LeBlanc and the Rambelles' Cheyenne Floyd; timely hitting by center fielder Lindsey Evans delivered the Rambelles the win to open their conference series.

Floyd earned her second win of the season, throwing 10 innings in relief, allowing three hits; the Pioneers' LeBlanc threw 12.1 innings, throwing 223 pitches and recording 23 strikeouts.

Evans and Paxton Scheurer collected two hits, and Keilei Garcia was the only Rambelle not to strike out against LeBlanc.

The Rambelles are 15-9 and 7-6 in conference play.
