Angelo State steamrolls into LSC Baseball Tourney quarterfinals

Top-seeded Angelo State University pushed its winning streak to 15 games after sweeping St. Mary's 15-5 and 23-5 in the first round of the Lone Star Conference Baseball Tournament Saturday at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.

ASU improved to 42-10 and advanced to the quarterfinals. St. Mary's dropped to 23-29.

The Rams will host the next round of the tourney beginning on Thursday.

In Game 1 against the Rattlers, the Rams scored three runs in the first, third, fifth and seventh innings.

First baseman Aaron Walters went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored.

Left fielder Justin Lee (1-for-4), right fielder Koby Kelton (3-for-5, 2 runs scored) and catcher Tripp Clark (3-for-3, 3 runs scored) drove in two runs each.

ASU starter Benjamin Elder (7-2) went six complete to earn the win. He limited St. Mary's to five hits and one earned run, finishing with seven strikeouts and no walks.

Rattlers starter Steven Medrano (4-5) took the loss after giving up nine hits and seven earned runs in 2.2 innings.

In the nightcap, the Rams led 9-3 after three innings before putting up an eight-spot in the fourth for a commanding 17-3 advantage.

Third baseman Kamden Kelton had a monster performance, going 3-for-7 with five RBIs and two runs scored. He had a two-run dinger in the sixth.

Second baseman Austin Beck (3-for-4, 2 runs scored) and designated hitter Jordan Williams (2-for-2, 2 runs scored) drove in three runs apiece.

Pinch hitter/catcher Charlie Bartlett (1-for-3), shortstop Justin Harris and the right fielder Kelton (3-for-7, 2 runs scored) had two RBIs each.

Clark had a solo homer in the third.

Rams starter Aaron Munson allowed six hits and three earned runs in three innings, before Carson Childers (7-1) worked the next two frames to get the victory. He struck out four and walked one.
