WAUSAU – After 50 years, Angelo's Family Pizzeria will close its doors.

The restaurant, 1206 Sixth St. in Wausau, announced on its Facebook page Tuesday evening that they will close and transition to only selling wholesale frozen pizzas.

"We have given this a lot of thought and made this difficult decision based on age, health, and family," the post said. "It's time to move on and give our son, Pete, the opportunity to take our business in a different direction. We are proud of his decision and hope you will continue to support us."

The last day for the bar and delivery service will be June 5.

The Facebook post said they will have frozen pizzas in local stores and bars and they will also be available for pick-up at their Wausau location. Current gift certificates can still be used but only at the restaurant location. The locations where people can buy the restaurant's frozen pizzas and the hours they can be picked up will be posted in the future.

Social media reactions flooded in after the restaurant's announcement. In a post on the You Know You're From WAUSAU, WI If... Facebook page, people expressed sadness and support.

"Wow, that is sad to hear. Angelo’s has been an icon on 6th Street as long as I can remember. Just won’t (be) the same without it. Glad we can still pick up frozen ones," one commenter wrote.

"Thank you for all the great pizza, friendships that were made during the many years of serving the BEST pizza over the years," another commenter said. "You will be missed and will look for the places that serve your pizzas & buy the frozen too!"

The owners of the restaurant expressed gratitude to the community in their post.

"We want to thank Wausau and the surrounding areas for their loyalty and support for so many years. This is such a great community!"
