Angier, New Mexico State baseball begin preseason practices

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KTSM) – On the diamond at New Mexico State, a new era of Aggie baseball has arrived, as first year skipper Jake Angier and his squad have already begun preseason workouts ahead of the start of the 2024 campaign in mid-February.

As a reminder, Angier comes highly regarded from the University of Oregon, where he was the Ducks pitching coach last season, helping Oregon to within one game of a trip to the College World Series in 2023.

He now steps into his first head coaching gig with the Aggies with many of the same players from last year’s team that struggled to a 14-37 record during a tumultuous 2023 season.

Angier’s job has been to redefine the culture completely and he hopes to have the Aggies ready to compete in their first year in Conference USA.

“You don’t just set it (the culture), you’ve got to rebuild that thing every single year,” Angier said. “The goals for the year are to play the way that we want to play, have the standard of toughness that we want to have and really go to work at making that a better thing every single day.”

His new players have responded to his style of coaching quickly and are excited to see where the 2024 season can take them if everything goes to plan.

“I definitely like the culture that’s been built here. I enjoyed the process during the fall and I think it’s made us a lot better and got us to where we need to be for the season,” said NMSU veteran infielder Logan Gallina.

NMSU will open Angier era on Feb. 16 with a four-game home series against South Dakota State.
