New Angle for Rockland: What are you looking for in your local news?

Hello Rockland! We're changing up our Rockland Angle newsletter a bit. The new format allows more of a conversation with our readers. If you'd like to share your ideas about coverage, or just general Rockland-centric comments, please email me at ncutler@lohud.com.

We're hoping to include more quick updates and "news you can use" for Rockland residents, as well as a summary of what you may have missed during the week. The Angle will be sent out every Monday.

One nice thing about the new format – I can add art! So, I dug through my camera roll and found this lovely artwork from Jawonio in New City.

Artwork created collaboratively with Jawonio participants and direct service professionals is on display at the nonprofit's New City headquarters on North Little Tor Road.

The artwork on display comes from participants and direct-care workers. I was itching to find a place to share! (You can click here for a gallery of photos.)

Onto a review of recent Rockland news:

Did your home suffer damage during Hurricane Ida? Rockland has been declared a disaster site by FEMA, so individual disaster assistance is available. Businesses can also apply for loans from the Small Business Administration to fix damage from the Sept. 1-3 storm. But the deadline to file a claim is Monday, Dec. 6. You can visit the Rockland County Disaster Recovery Center, located at the Orangetown Soccer Complex Building, 175 Old Orangeburg Road in Orangeburg. You can also get help through at DisasterAssistance.gov, on the FEMA mobile app or by calling the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362.

Today, United Way of Rockland announced Stephen Papas will take over as president and CEO on Dec. 6.

If you've been in Rockland and read The Journal News for a long time, you would know the stunning work of photojournalist Diane Stevenson. Our former colleague went on to a journalistic career in Oregon and then carved out a successful career within the Oregon wine community. Diane died Nov. 10 at age 70. We've been remembering Diane, her amazing work, and her kind spirit.
