Animal control officers seize dozens of cats, living and dead

ONONDAGA TWP. — Animal control officers seized dozens of cats and a dog from a residence in southern Ingham County on Thursday as part of a cruelty or neglect investigation.

Ingham County Animal Control officials said the agency served a search warrant at a home in the 4100 block of South Onondaga Road after receiving a tip that "approximately 50 cats (were) suffering from various illness and injuries in addition to multiple deceased animals on the property."

Officers removed 33 living cats, five dead cats and one dog and took them to the county shelter in Mason, the agency said in a news release.

"A number of the animals will require medical attention due to various illnesses and injuries," the release said.

The "suspect" has surrendered the animals to the county and is cooperating with the investigation, officials said.

The agency said it will send a report to prosecutors but did not say if it will seek criminal charges.

Animal control suggested it could use donations of nonclumping cat litter and any brand of wet cat food to help it deal with the influx of cats. Anyone interested in fostering animals for the agency can get information here.
