Animals battle heatwave with ice treats at Mexican zoo
STORY: Zoo workers at the Animaya zoo, prepared popsicles made specially to fit the needs of each species.
Jaguars enjoyed popsicles made from rabbit meat or chicken and frozen blood with water. The treats hung from a tree so the animals could also play with them, encouraging physical activity.
Yucatan black howler monkeys and spider monkeys received popsicles made from fruits and juice.
Mud and water pits were excavated into certain enclosures, such as the tigers' habitat, so the animals could take a dip and freshen up.
Merida's Deputy Director of General Services, Arturo Antuna, said these mud pits also "help them (animals) to naturally get rid of parasites, it protects their skin."
