Previously, it was reported that about 300 animals had died due to the Russian terror act, as the zoo in Nova Kakhovka was entirely flooded. Actually, all of zoo inhabitants except its ducks and swan were thought to be dead.

However, some animals managed to escape such horrible fate thanks to the employee, called Valia, who had taken them home earlier. Namely, 46 guinea pigs, parrots, flying squirrels, and chinchillas managed to escape the flood.

"Some animals weren't at Dibrova zoo, but stayed by Valia's place. That's why they are survived!" the message reads.

The zoo's staff suggest that some more pets could managed to survive and now are wandering in the forests next to the Dnipro River.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian actress and television hostess Olha Sumska published photos of the Nova Kakhovka zoo's animals who also became the victims of the Russian aggression.

"These animals are gone. They were killed by villains, the occupiers, who blew up the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station. Kazkova Dibrova Zoo reported it. It's scary to even imagine how many animals died from the actions of terrorists... What pain," Sumska wrote in an Instagram post.

Nova Kakhovka dam breach – what is known

During the night of June 6, Russian forces, which have occupied the town of Nova Kakhovka for over a year, blew up the dam, completely or partially flooding downstream cities and towns along the Dnipro River, including the reginal capital of Kherson, Ukrainian authorities say.

The evacuation of citizens in the affected areas on the right (western) bank of the Dnipro River has been ongoing throughout the night. Meanwhile, a humanitarian disaster is underway on the left bank, which is under Russian occupation and suffered a great deal more due to its lower elevation.

At an urgent meeting of the National Security and Defense Council, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy ordered the evacuation of at-risk areas and the provision of drinking water to towns and villages served by the affected Kakhovka Reservoir.

The Kakhovska Hydroelectric Power Station is completely destroyed, with no possibility of its repair, Ukrainian state hydroelectric company Ukrhydroenergo said. Not all of the dam was destroyed, but it suffered significant damage, the Ukrainian military’s South Operational Command said.

The Ukrainian Prosecutor General's Office has opened an investigation on the incident under the charge of ecocide.

President Zelenskyy called Russia's attack on the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant the largest man-made environmental disaster in Europe in decades.

Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence has said that the Russian demolition of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant increases the threat of a nuclear disaster.
