With a star-studded front row seating the likes of Marc Jacobs and Sofia Coppola, Anna Sui reminded audiences in the Strand’s Rare Book Room that reading is sexy.

The fall 2024 collection, inspired by the Agatha Christie character Miss Marple, paid homage to ’90s English sleuth chic, with checkered sweaters, scarves and knee-high socks; newsboy caps; pleated skirts; and bejeweled brooches.

“I enjoyed watching all the BBC TV production, whether in a quaint English countryside or the bustling city of London. Everyone dressing in sharp tweeds, fetching fair isles, and charming crochet collars garb. And Miss Marple with her iconic Gladstone bag,” Sui wrote on Instagram.

Sui’s collection calls to mind the recent infatuation with librarian style and geek chic, with the resurgence of thin-framed specs and smart dressing.

Saturday’s catwalk began with garments in bright orange and deep browns, inspired by a 1920s and ’30s potter Clarice Cliff, according to the label’s social media. As the runway procession continued, the colors became darker, a nod to Virginia Woolf, as the ’90s grunge soundtrack played, with songs by Smashing Pumpkins, the Breeders and Sonic Youth.

The accessories leaned into the book smart motif with tote bags and a chic rendition of a grandma purse made of floral fabric with an old-school kiss lock closure, as well as vintage-inspired neck jewelry — some of Sui’s choker-esque necklaces featured a black ribbon chain and with black and white profile pendants akin to famous literary greats.

The catwalk closed with Sui’s sparkling evening wear, which, per the brand’s Instagram, embraced “the glamour and sophistication of 30s London nightclubs” and featured a sea of sequins and beads on both garments and headpieces, while other ensembles were less flashy, instead utilizing velvet, silk and mesh for a more subdued look.
