Annas wins twice at conference

Jan. 26—BOONE — South Caldwell's Avery Annas captured a pair of prep swimming victories in Wednesday evening's Northwestern 3A/4A Conference meet at Watauga Community Recreation Center.

Annas won the boys' 200-yard freestyle and the 100 breaststroke. He prevailed in the 200 with a clocking of 1:54.66 over Morganton Freedom's Emerson Miller (2:00.11), and hit the wall first in the breast (1:05.04) over Watauga's Paul Gamiel (1:14.56).

South teammate Owen Griffith won the boys' 50 free (24.50) over Watauga's Vaughn Ladd (24.55).

The host school claimed both team titles. On the boys' side, South was second (351-235) and Hibriten placed fourth (117) in the six-team field.

Hibriten's girls finished runner-up (286-236), with the Lady Spartans in third (214). The Lady Panthers avenged a loss to South a week ago.

Hibriten's Elettra Dalcerri earned a pair of runner-up showings in the girls' 200 free (2:05.69) and 100 butterfly (1:02.99).

Teammate Anslie Norris grabbed a second-place finish with a personal-record run (1:27.69) in the breast over South's Taylor Guzman (1:29.47).

The Lady Panthers' 200 relay of Acacia Felmlee, Norris, Darby Keen and Dalcerri (1:57.6) took runner-up, while the 400 relay of Keen, Felmlee, Laci McPeak and Dalcerri also came in second (pr 4:29.47).

South's girls (Choloe Bolick, Zoe Annas, Jade Moyer, Kaylee Moore) took runner-up in the 200 medley relay (2:17.04) over Hibriten (2:19.48; McPeak, Norris, Addison Brookeshie, Scout Spencer).

The Spartan boys (Sawyer Thompson, Skyler Skew, Annas, Griffith) were runner-up in the 200 medley over Hibriten (2:24.36; Richard Hedrick, Patrick Anders, Aedon Stevens, Nathan Mull).

Bolick finished second (28.59) in girls' 50 free. She also claimed third (1:05.07) in the 100 with Keen fourth (1:05.88) and Moore fifth (1:06.52).

Hibriten's Garrett Goudas was second in the boys' 500 free (6:17.86). The junior also swam a pr in the 200 free (2:12.36) for fourth.

South's boys (Griffith, Thompson, Shew, Annas) hit the wall second in the 400 relay (3:51.75).

Griffith was third in the boys' 100 free (56.08) in front of Shew (59.17). Hedrick (pr 1:01.47) and Hibriten teammate Matt Land (1:09.95) were seventh and 10th, respectively.

Hibriten's boys (Hedrick, Land, Jesse Tester, Nathan Mull) were third in the 200 relay in front of South (2:09.95; Mason Hubbard, Ethan Haas, Nathan Hall, Harriss Inman).

The Lady Spartans' Kyra Westerfield (2:30.63) and Makayla Felts (2:37.51) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 200 free.

Haas was seventh (2:31.43) in the boys' 200.

In the girls' 200 IM: Zoe Annas (2:55.78) and McPeak (3:01.24) were fourth and fifth, respectively. Hibriten's Addy Connor (3:05.20) and Felmlee (3:07.02) came in eighth and ninth, respectively.

In the girls' 50 free: Keen (29.01) was fourth, Norris ninth (29.66) and Moore 10th (29.87).

Shew was fifth (26.20) in the boys' 50. Hall (1:19.85) placed fifth in 100 butterfly.

In the girls' 100 butterfly: South's Jade Moyer (1:27.88) and Karey Minton (1:42.14) were seventh and eighth, respectively. In the 100 free: Felmlee (1:14.19) hit the wall in 10th.

In the girls' 500 free: Westerfield (6:51.62) was fourth, Hibriten's Scout Spencer (7:19.04) sixth, Norah Cool (7:22.40) eighth, Felts (7:24.50) ninth and Brookeshire (7:25.39) 10th.

Haas (7:10.98) was sixth in the boys' 500 and teammate Luke Parurch (8:25.38) took 10th.

South's girls (Zannas, Lilly Bentley, Westerfield, Felts) were fourth in the 200 relay. In the boys' relay: Hibriten (Hedrick, Land, Tester, Mull) took third (1:54.42) and South (Hubbard, Haas, Hall, Inman) was fourth (1:59.42).

Hibriten's McPeak (1:19.44) and Brookeshire (1:23.33) claimed fourth and fifth, respectively, in the girls' 100 back,with South's Minton (1:29.02) in ninth.

South's Sawyer Thompson (1:06.43) grabbed foufth in the boys' 100 back, with teammate Max Macchia (1:30.96) in seventh.

In the girls' 100 breast: South's Annas (1:31.08) was fifth, Connor (1:32.77) seventh, Bentley (1:33.45) eighth and South's Emmalyn Johnson (1:37.61) 10th.

South teammates Hall (1:19.83) and Hubbard (1:24.50) were fifth and seventh, respectively, in the boys' breast.

Hibriten's boys (Hedrick, Stevens, Mull, Goudas) were fourth in the 400 relay (4:23.19).

The Class 3A regional bracket will be announced on Sunday, with action picking back up next Friday at Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center. 2A competition is at the same Charlotte location a day later.

The state meet is Feb. 11 at Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary.
