Annie Nabwe is dominant in shot put, sets new record at State

May 27—The University of Minnesota pounced on the opportunity to sign Annie Nabwe to a full-ride scholarship last summer and she is not disappointing the Gophers one bit.

It's been a year of waiting but Thursday afternoon, the 2022 North Dakota State Track and Field Meet finally opened up to competition and Nabwe wasted no time making her mark in the record books.

Nabwe not only repeated as the state champ in Class A girls shot put, but she set a new school, state meet, and all-time state record with a throw of 49 feet, 10 inches. The senior has won every single shot put contest she has competed in the last two years — with throws ranging from 44 to 49 feet.

Prior to the state's all-time best throw, Nabwe's record stood at 48 feet, 4 inches, a mark she achieved just 16 days ago at Jamestown's True Team Invitational.

She's not done either.

Nabwe qualified to State in shot, discus, javelin and the 100 meter dash. Nabwe has also placed first in all nine outdoor contests she has competed in. The senior set a new school

record in discus last weekend at the West Region meet, pitching her disc one inch shy of 152 feet.

Javelin has been a little more shakey for the senior, but she still has notched five first-place finishes with her best marks coming at the Bill Jansen Last Chance Meet on May 16 where she threw the stick 132 feet, 2 inches.

In the 100, Nabwe only has two outdoor starts on record but she placed first in both of them, finishing the straightaway in 12.44 and 12.36 seconds.

Thomas Allmer put a new record on the books as well, setting a personal best of 50 feet, 6 inches. Jacob Burckhard of Bismarck Century won out in the shot put race with a throw of 55 feet, 9 inches. Allmer is set to square off in the discus competition later this weekend.

Brode Hillstrom and Devin Beach opened up their final state meet over at the long jump pit. Hillstrom was the top qualifier for the Blue Jays and he ended up 13 with a mark of 20 feet, 5 inches. Beach was nine inches behind, leaving the board and settling in at 19 feet, 8 inches.

The seven other female Blue Jay state qualifiers are set to square off later this weekend.
