Annual Labor Day Weekend Soccer Tournament Canceled For 2020

ENFIELD, CT — For the first time since its inception in 1992, a Labor Day weekend memorial soccer tournament attracting teams from several New England states will not be played this year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The Barmak/Bryson tournament is a fundraising event which benefits the Kevin Barmak Memorial Scholarship. Drawing hundreds of competitors annually at the Lego fields on Shaker Road and the former Fermi High School athletic complex, the event celebrates the life of Barmak, as well as longtime volunteer Scott Bryson.

Kevin Barmak’s outstanding soccer career included playing with local youth, District, State Olympic development and scholastic teams. Unfortunately, he passed away on Feb. 23, 1990 of complications from a brain tumor; he was just 15.

In 2015, Bryson's name was added to the tournament. A childhood friend of Kevin's, he was the event coordinator for two years, and was very active in coaching multiple youth sports before his sudden passing in Apr. 2015 at age 39.
