Discussion of Ulysses S. Grant's turning point during Civil War

Chris Mackowski will discuss the illustrious career of Ulysses S. Grant, entitled “Grant’s Next Chapter: Vicksburg, Chattanooga, and the Rise of U.S. Grant" at Brunswick Civil War Round Table meeting. Mackowski is the editor-in-chief and co-founder of Emerging Civil War, and the series editor of the award-winning Emerging Civil War Series. He is a historian-in-residence at Stevenson Ridge, a historic property on the Spotsylvania battlefield in central Virginia. He also serves as vice president on the board of directors for the Central Virginia Battlefields Trust, serves on the advisory board of the Civil War Roundtable Congress and Brunswick Civil War Round Table.

Gen. Grant was the most acclaimed Union general during the Civil War with victories at Shiloh, Vicksburg and Chattanooga, and defeated Gen. Robert E. Lee in the Overland Campaign, Petersburg and Appomattox. Grant went on to serve two terms as United States President.

The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 4 at the Hatch Auditorium on Caswell Beach. An art reception will be held for Shelby Hanson Tiziani, Kris Scheppmann, and Susan Pfeffer from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 6 at the Leland Cultural Arts Center. The exhibit runs through April 27. Tiziani is drawn to subjects that evoke a sense of calm through color and shapes. Scheppman and Pfeffer create functional pottery inspired by the natural world.

Medication drop-off event at Dosher

“Operation Medicine Cabinet” will host a "drive-through" drug take-back event at Dosher Memorial Hospital, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, April 6. Local residents are invited to drop-off unwanted and expired prescription medications at the hospital's front entrance, where law enforcement takes what is collected for safe incineration. Fish fry

The VFW Calabash Post #7288 is hosting its annual fish fry on Friday, April 7, from 4:30-6 p.m. at 900 Carter Drive, Calabash. The cost is $13 a plate, which consists of an 8-to-10-ounce fried Haddock filet, baked potato and slaw. Clam chowder is also available for $3. Tickets are available at the door. Dine-in or take-out.

Southport Spring Festival

Welcome spring in style at the Southport Spring Festival, a tradition for more than 27 years. The festival will be held 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, April 7 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, April 8. The event will feature musical entertainment, over 160 handmade arts and crafts vendors, children’s activities plants and flowers sale, and more. Food vendors will be on site. Free admission. No pets allowed.
