Another 250 apartments proposed for Columbia Vista

Another large apartment complex is being proposed for Columbia’s Vista neighborhood.

Ohio-based Silver Hills Development hopes to build 250 units in a seven-story tower at 405 Gervais St., just across Huger Street from the SpringHill Suites Marriott Hotel.

Plans submitted to the Columbia Planning Commission also include a 330-space parking garage for the roughly 2.5 acre site, along with room for a fitness center and other unspecified amenities.

The complex would have 223 one-bedroom and 27 two-bedroom apartments, according to the plans.

“Importantly, the building will provide for density needed for new urbanism and walkability, however the façade will appear to be broken into many distinct buildings that follow European and New Orleans style architecture,” the plans note.

The project is also meant to complement the nearby waterfront, the application adds.

The proposal, which goes before the Planning Commission Sept. 14, joins a growing number of plans for new housing in Columbia’s Vista.

Next door, at the former SCANA bus depot site at 1409 Huger St, developers have received a county tax break to build a $100 million housing complex.

Another 200 apartments have been proposed near the Columbia Convention Center by longtime Columbia developer Ben Arnold.
