Another Use for Our Beloved Abstract Rugs

When we saw how Beni Rugs founders Robert Wright and Tiberio Lobo-Navia hung their Rothko design above the bed in their Brooklyn loft, everything clicked into place. We already viewed abstract rugs, with their quirky color-blocking and odd mishmashes of geometric shapes, as art, and here one was actually treated as such. Why weren't we all doing this?

The thing is, pulling off a similar look has its challenges. First of all, you need to find a wall tall and wide enough to display a large area rug. (Not easy.) On top of that, you need the funds to actually buy said rug. (Even more difficult.) It would seem the idea is better in theory. But then we came across the look on a smaller scale in Ferm Living's spring/summer 2019 catalog. The Danish brand hung what looks to be a two-by-three-foot version of one of its new limited-edition Tufted Wall Deco Rugs above a fireplace mantel, just as you would an abstract painting. Much more doable.

In Ferm Living's Spring/Summer 2019 catalog, a new limited-edition Tufted Wall Deco Rug hangs in place of art above the fireplace.

As often happens when you spot something you love, we suddenly started seeing this idea on all of our favorite rug purveyors' websites and Instagram accounts.

The universe has spoken: Your most beloved abstract rug belongs at eye level, not underfoot.
