Another Bloody Weekend In Chicago: 63 Shot, 16 Killed

CHICAGO — Violence rocked Chicago for the second weekend in a row, with 63 people shot and 16 killed by gunfire, including a 10-year-old girl and a toddler. Homicides in Chicago jumped 25 percent — climbing to 295 — 60 more than this time last year, the Chicago Tribune reported.

One-year-old Sincere Gaston was shot sitting in his carseat Saturday afternoon while riding home from the laundromat with his mother in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood. The 22-year-old woman was driving southbound near 60th and Halsted when a Nissan pulled up beside her and start shooting in the passenger side of her car. The mother was grazed in the head, while her son suffered a gunshot wound to the chest. She drove to St. Bernard Hospital where Sincere was pronounced dead. The mother is in stable condition.

The child's death prompted Mayor Lori Lightfoot to issue a tweet, saying she was tired of "burying our children."

A few hours later, at 9:40 p.m. in Logan Square, 10-year-old Lena Nunez and her 8-year-old cousin were sitting on a couch inside an apartment in the 3500 block of West Dickens. The girl was hit in the head by a stray bullet that came in through the window. Her cousin's face was sprayed with glass. Lena died later at Stroger Hospital.

Police believe two groups of men were firing guns at each other in the street.

Another 8-year-old girl, also sitting inside an apartment in the 6600 block of South Wood Street, was grazed in the head by a stray bullet. She is in good condition at Comer Children's Hospital.

A 17-year-old boy, Antiwon Douglas, also died Saturday morning after he was shot in the chest. Police said the boy got into a fight with someone in a "large crowd" in Humboldt Park.

Over the weekend, President Donald Trump penned a critical letter on White House letterhead to Gov. J.B. Pritzker and the Chicago mayor, stating he was "horrified" by Chicago's continued violence. Trump also blamed the elected officials "lack of leadership on this important issue" that "continues to fail the people you have sworn to protect."

Pritzker's office dismissed the president's letter as a "publicity stunt" designed to distract from Trump's mishandling of the coronavirus pandemic in the United States. Lightfoot tweeted "I don't need leadership lessons from Donald Trump."

Here is a timeline of the weekend's shootings, starting at 2:05 a.m. Friday, June 26, and ending at 11:04 p.m. Sunday, June 28.

FRIDAY, JUNE 25

A 26-year-old man said he was walking home around 2:05 a.m. in the 1600 block of North Mayfield Avenue when he saw three people playing with a handgun. The gun fell to the ground and went off, firing a round in the man's left knee. The man self-transported to West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park where he is listed in good condition. No one is in custody.

A 33-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and hip while walking down the sidewalk in the 1000 block of West Maxwell Street around 3:34 a.m. His is listed in good condition at Stroger Hospital.

At 3:50 a.m., a 28-year-old man told police he was walking in the 500 block of West 63rd Street when an known vehicle drove up to him. He heard shots and felt pain. The man was shot in the right leg. He is listed in good condition at St. Bernard Hospital.

A 31-year-old man said he was traveling in a vehicle southbound in the 10200 block of South Halsted Street at 3:51 p.m. Three people on the sidewalk produced firearms and fired shots at the man vehicle. He suffered a gunshot wound to the left leg and is listed in good condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

In the 200 block of North Leclaire Avenue, a 42-year-old man was on the sidewalk when someone came out of the alley and approached him. Police said the person opened fire, striking the man in the head. The man was pronounced dead at Mt. Sinai Hospital.

A 41-year-old man was walking on the sidewalk in the 2700 block of South Kedvale Avenue around 6:15 p.m. when a dark-colored vehicle pulled up and someone inside the vehicle pulled out a gun and started firing. The man was shot in the lower back and is listed in stable condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Around 7:30 p.m., a 46-year-old man was on the sidewalk in the 5200 block of South Wood Street when heard gunshots and felt pain. The man was apparently wounded in the buttocks where he was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

SATURDAY, JUNE 27

A 27-year-old man was standing outside in the 600 block of West Lawrence Avenue around 12:20 a.m. in Chicago's Uptown neighborhood, when he heard shots and felt pain, receiving a gunshot wound to leg. The man told police he did not see who shot him or know where the shots came from. He is listed in good condition at Amita St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.

At 1:33 a.m. in the 2200 block of West 21st Street, a 46-year-old man was grazed in the back when he was shot by a male Hispanic standing on the corner with a group of other people. Police said the wounded man was dropping off another man in his car when shots ran out at the passenger as he exited the car. The man refused medical treatment and is in good condition. Police said the wounded man does not have a criminal background, nor is he known to police. The man was working as a ride share driver and many not have been the intended target.

Around 4:40 a.m., a male friend displayed a shotgun and shot a 50-year-old man in the hand while they were having an argument in a residence in the 800 block of East 81st Street. The friend fled the scene and is not in custody. The man was taken to Jackson Park Hospital in good condition. Police said the wounded mam is known to police.

A 25-year-old man drove himself to Mount Sinai Hospital after he was shot in the neck and face at 4:49 a.m. in the 1500 block of South California. He is currently in critical condition and is not able to speak The wounded man is known to police.

A 33-year-old man died of gunshot wounds during a domestic incident around 6:20 a.m. in the 9300 block of South Lyons. Police said the man walked into the residence and began hitting the children present in the home. A woman tried to intervene when the man started shocking her. She was able to grab a revolver nearby and fired at the man, hitting him the leg. He was brought to University of Chicago Medical Center in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead. Detectives are questioning a "person of interest."

A man in his thirties was found sitting in a Chevy Tahoe in the 1100 block of West 57th Street with a gunshot wound to the head around 6:50 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Witnesses told police they heard gunfire and saw a 2003 Nissan speeding away. No arrests have been made.

Two people were shot at 9:24 a.m. in the 8000 block of South Exchange. A 48-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to leg. The 39-year-old man was shot in the stomach. Both were taken to Mount Sinai in serious condition. Police said the pair were standing outside a residence in the 3100 block of West Flournoy when a person approached them on foot and started shooting. The shooter ran to a vehicle and fled the scene.

At 9:53 a.m. in the 4400 block of West 28th Street, a 20-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and arm. The man is in fair condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.

A 25-year-old man was shot on the rear side of his body around 10:25 a.m. in the 1300 block of South Springfield Avenue. He was brought to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police said the man was on foot when a silver colored vehicle drove by and a passenger began shooting.

A 17-year-old boy was with a large group of people in the 1100 block of North Monticello Avenue when he got into an argument with another person around 11:25 a.m. The person produced a gun and started firing, wounding the teen in the upper left chest. He was brought to Stroger Hospital where he later died.

In the 8000 block of South Exchange just after noon, a 37-year-old mam was in a vehicle parked on the street. A person approached the vehicle when he produced a gun and fired at the man, hitting him in the buttocks. He was taken to South Shore Hospital in stable condition.

A 22-year-old mother and her 20-month-old son, Sincere Gaston, were driving home from the laundromat around 2:10 p.m. in the 6000 block of South Halsted Street. Another car pulled up beside them and began firing shots at the passenger side of the vehicle. The mother suffered a graze wound in the head. The child, who was in his car seat, was hit in the chest. She drove herself to St. Bernard Hospital, where the child was pronounced dead. The mother was listed in stable condition.

A 28-year-old man was found unresponsive in the 7600 block of South Philips around 3:50 p.m. The man had suffered a gunshot wound in the chest, neck and right arm. He is listed in critical condition at University of Chicago Medical Center.

A minute later at 3:51 p.m., a man of unknown age was found the 4400 block of South Kedzie Avenue with a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he later died.

Two men were in the hallway of an apartment building in the 3300 block of West Douglas Avenue around 5 p.m. Another person entered the building and demanded property. He fired shots at both men, hitting the 29-year-old man multiple times in the body and the 31-year-old man in the hip. The 29-year-old was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition. The 31-year-old man is listed in stable condition at Stroger Hospital.

A 10-year-old girl identified as Lena Nunez was inside an apartment in the 3500 block of West Dickens Avenue around 9:40 p.m. when she was struck by a stray bullet that came through the window. The bullet hit the child in the head. She died later at Stroger Hospital. No one is in custody. Police believe a group of men may have been shooting at each other in the street.

Four people are in custody after they were observed running from where a 20-year-old man was at 10:06 p.m. in the 0-100 block of west Illinois Street. The 20-year-old man was taken to Northwestern Medical Center in fair condition with gunshots woulds in the arm and leg. The injured man does not appear to be known to police.

At 11:18 p.m, an 8-year-old girl was sitting on the couch inside a residece in the 6600 block of South Wood Street, when a stray bullet came through the window. The girl suffered a graze wound to the head. She is listed in fair condition at Comer Children's Hospital. No one is in custody and police don't know where the shots were fired.

A 29-year-old man was shot in the leg around 11:20 p.m. in the 7300 block of South Kimbark. Police said he was being uncooperative. He drove himself to Loyola Hospital where he listed is in fair condition.

A 43-year-old man was standing in an alley in the 3500 block of West Dickens around 9:40 p.m. when he heard shots and felt pain, suffering a graze wound to the neck. He told police he did not see the shooter or shooters, nor did he know where the shots came from. He took himself to University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition. The injured man is known to police.

Three men were shot and one man was killed who were part of a large gathering around 11:35 p.m. The men were part of a large gathering in the 3100 block of South Rhoades. The four were taken to University of Chicago Medical Center. A 21-year old suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and is in fair condition. A 19-year-man was wounded in the leg and is in good condition, and 24-year-old man was wounded in the groin and is in fair condition. A 22-year-old was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound in the head. Area One detectives are talking to two people, pointed out by witnesses as the possible shooters. None of the wounded are known to police.

SUNDAY, JUNE 28

A 29-year-old man was shot walking down the 2700 block of East 75th Street at midnight. He self-transported to University of Chicago Medical Center where he is listed in good condition with gunshot wound in the left. He is known to police.

A few minutes before 1 a.m., a 22-year-old man was shot as he was walking down the 10900 block of South State Street by the occupant of a Nissan. He self-transported to St.Bernard Hospital, where he is listed in fair condition with a gunshot would in the leg. His background is known to police.

Two men who were part of a group of people were shot at 1:10 a.m. in the 6400 block of South King Drive. The men heard shots and felt pain, each suffering gunshot wounds. The 19-year-old was shot in back and chest area; the second man, 32, suffered wounds to each leg. Both are in fair condition at University of Chicago Medical Center.

A 26-year-old woman was standing among a group of people at 1:23 a.m. in the 3400 block of West Franklin. She told police she heard shot and felt pain, suffering a gunshot wound in the lower backside. The woman is in good condition at Stroger Hospital. She is not known to police and is not believed to be the intended target.

Two men ages 22 and 27 were in a vehicle traveling in the 7000 block of Chicago around 1:45 a.m. An unknown occupant inside and SUV started firing at the men's vehicle. The younger man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and is in critical condition. The older man was hit in the abdomen. He is in fair condition. Both are at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

A 38-year-old man was driving in the 7800 block of South May around 1:48 a.m. when a male black standing in the street with a group of people fired shots into his car, grazing his head. He was transported to St. Bernard Hospital in fair condition. The injured mam is known to police.

A 24-year-old man was driving when a male Hispanic among a group of friends on the street fired shots, grazing the man's back. He was treated on scene and is in good condition.

Two men were shot in a drive-by around 3:36 a.m. The 19-year-old and 34-year-old men were standing outside a residence in the 10000 Block of North Trumbull when the occupant of a passing vehicle opened fire. The younger man suffered a gunshot wound to the hip while the man was hit in the leg, Both are in fair condition at Stroger Hospital. The older man is known to police.

Three people were shot by someone from a passing vehicle at 5:47 a.m. The men were among a group in the 500 block of North Menard Avenue. A 31-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and foot. He is listed in serious condition. A 35-year-od woman was shot in the foot. Both are in fair condition at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park. Another 37-year-o.d woman suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and is in fair condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert just before 4 a.m. and discovered a 28-year-old man lying unresponsive on the sidewalk in the 1300 block of North Mayfield. The man had multiple gunshot wounds to the back and face. He was pronounced dead on scene.

At 5:42 a.m., a 31-year-old woman was a passenger in a vehicle when gunshots were fired in the 1700 block of W. Juneway Terrace. One round came through the rear window gazing her on the left side of the head. The woman was taken to St Francis Hospital in Evanston, where she is listed in critical condition.

A 19-year-old man was walking in the 1400 block of West Lunt St. at 6:59 a.m. when another man approached and fired one round in the back of the 19-year-old's head. Police said the shooter was last seen running to a black SUV that fled westbound on Lunt towards Clark Street. The gravely injured man was pronounced dead at St. Francis Hospital.

An 18-year-old man was shot multiple times in the torso around 7:18 a.m. in the 8200 block of South Escanaba. He was pronounced deceased at University of Chicago Medical Center.

Around 8:28 a.m. a 38-year-old man was walking in the alley In the 2500 block of South Troy Avenue. A man got out an SUV and opened fire before getting back into vehicle. The man was pronounced dead on the scene.

Just two minutes later at 8:39 a.m., a 21-year-old man was running when he heard shots and felt pain. He reported to St. Bernard Hospital where he was treated for a gunshot wound to the leg.

Two men were sitting on the porch in the 3100 block of W. Flournoy when they both heard gunshots around 11:03 a.m. The 37-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound in the buttocks and the 39-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to the right hand. Both victims are in fair condition at Mt. Sinai Hospital.

A 32-year-old man is in good condition at West Suburban Hospital after he was shot in the shoulder. A dark-colored vehicle pulled up in the 5200 block of West LeMoyne Avenue. A person got out and started firing before reentering the vehicle and fleeing.

A 20-year-old man was shot in the buttocks around noon in the 6400 block of South Wolcott. A dark-colored vehicle pulled up and someone inside started firing. He is in stable condition at Mount Sinai Hospital.

Around 3:38 p.m., a 30-year-old man was in a backyard In the 6800 block of South Sangamon Avenue. He was approached by a person who pulled out a gun started shooting. The man was struck in the arm and back. He is listed in good condition at University of Chicago Hospital.

An 18-year-old man was hit by gunfire in an alley In the 1400 block of East 67th Place at 4:41 p.m., The man suffered a gunshot wound to the back. He is in stable condition at University of Chicago Hospital.

A 24-year-old man was walking down the 12100 block of South Michigan Avenue around 8:38 p.m. An unknown male black in a black vehicle fired shots, striking him in the head, back and shoulder. The man was pronounced on the scene. He does not appear to be known to police.

Approximately two minutes later, a 24-year-old woman was sitting on the porch with a group of friends in the 6600 block of South Evans. Police said she heard gunfire and felt pain. She suffered a gunshot wound to the stomach. Witnesses told police they didn't from which direction the gunshots came. The woman is listed in serious condition at University of Chicago Hospital.

A 19-year-old man was walking in the 4800 block of South Lacrosse at 8:58 p.m. when a black sedan pulled up occupied by four people. Someone inside asked what gang he was with before firing shots, hitting the man in the arm and back. He is in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital. He does not appear to be known to police.

Around 10 p.m., two men ages 20 and 24 were outside in the 1600 block of Jonquil Terrace, in Rogers Park. Someone drove up in a vehicle, possibly a black SUV, drove up and opened fire. The younger man suffered a gunshot would to the ankle and is in good condition. The older man was shot in the leg and lower backside and is in fair condition. Both self-transported to St. Francis Hospital in Evanston. Neither man is known to police.

A 23-year-old man was discovered unresponsive at 11:04 p.m. outside in the 4500 block of West Maypole with gunshot wounds to the hip. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

At 11:50 p.m., a 34-year-old woman was driving in the 5400 block of West Belmont when she saw a group of women fighting in the street. She heard gunshots and felt pain. Realizing she was shot she drove herself to Stroger Hospital, when she is in fair condition with two gunshot wounds to the shoulder. She told police she didn't know who shot her or where the shots came from.
