Another death reported from March 24 tornado in Sharkey County

The death toll has risen from the March 24 tornadoes that tore through Mississippi. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency announced Thursday that a Sharkey County resident who had been hospitalized since the EF-4 tornado ripped through the area had died.

The statewide death toll now stands at 22.

"The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is saddened to learn that one of the Sharkey County citizens hospitalized due to the March 24th tornadoes has passed away. This, unfortunately, brings the death toll in Sharkey County to 14, and statewide is 22 due to the severe weather. Our thoughts are with the families who’ve lost loved ones and are still recovering from the storms."

MEMA did not release the name of the latest victim.

The Sharkey-Humphreys county tornado had a classification of EF-4, with winds at 170 mph. It ranked in the top 2% of all tornadoes and was three-fourths of a mile wide on the ground. The tornado traveled nearly 60 miles before dissipating. Seventeen people died from injuries sustained in the storm — 14 in Sharkey County and three in Humphreys County.

Another tornado struck Carroll and Montgomery counties, killing three members of a Carroll County family. The EF3 tornado had winds of 155 mph and was about half a mile wide. That tornado traveled roughly 29 miles.

A third tornado caused fatalities in Monroe County. It also was rated an EF3 with 155 mph winds that traveled approximately 37 miles and was nearly a mile wide. A man and his infant daughter died in the storm's path.
