Another George Mason player jumps to Providence basketball. Who is it?

Another day, another player decides to follow Kim English from George Mason to Providence College.

This time it’s big man Josh Oduro, a two-time all-conference selection in the Atlantic 10. He will use an extra COVID-19 year as a graduate transfer with the Friars in 2023-24.

Oduro announced his commitment to Providence via social media Monday evening. He’s a traditional post presence at 6-foot-9 who racked up 13 double-doubles last season with the Patriots. Oduro repeated his first-team all-league honors while helping George Mason to a 20-13 overall mark.

Oduro started all 33 games for the Patriots last season, leading his team by averaging 15.6 points and 7.9 rebounds. He netted at least 20 points in five of his double-doubles and shot 57.9% from 2-point range. Oduro was a top-50 player nationally in fouls drawn per 40 minutes and a top-200 player in both offensive and defensive rebound percentage.

Oduro enjoyed a pair of impressive outings against a future rival — 24 points and 14 rebounds in a road win against the University of Rhode Island, and a season-high 27 points in a home victory over the Rams. He also piled up 26 points and a season-high 15 boards in a one-point road loss at Saint Louis. Oduro finished the year as one of 20 active players nationally with at least 1,300 points, 700 rebounds, 150 assists and 100 blocked shots.

Oduro prepped at Virginia power Paul VI Catholic before committing to George Mason for the 2019-20 season. He also had offers from Liberty, Rice, Quinnipiac, Towson, Bucknell, Siena and more before joining the Patriots. Oduro developed into a starter by the midpoint of his freshman season and was in the first five in each of his last 60 games with George Mason.

Oduro entered the transfer portal Saturday and quickly reunited with former top-100 prospect Justyn Fernandez — both pledged to the Friars over the last 48 hours. Fernandez played a lone year with the Patriots before following English to Providence. He claimed offers from Illinois, Texas A&M, Arizona State, VCU, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Florida, Wake Forest, Clemson, Boston College, Virginia Tech and Big East rivals Butler, Georgetown and Seton Hall before committing to George Mason for the 2022-23 campaign.

English is set to be officially introduced at an Alumni Hall press conference on Wednesday morning. He was in Los Angeles over the weekend and received some good news on his visit. Wing forward Donovan Santoro reaffirmed his commitment to the Friars out of Southern California Academy. English was attempting to persuade teammates Garwey Dual and Drew Fielder to join Providence as scheduled prior to Ed Cooley leaving for Georgetown.

English was officially hired Thursday and has hit the recruiting trail running. He met with potential returning players Friday and made a reported handful of scholarship offers per Verbal Commits to Mid-Atlantic prospects — English was already recruiting several of them while with the Patriots. Point guard Daquan Davis, shooting guard Caleb Williams, small forward Isaiah Abraham and power forward Patrick Ngongba II are all Class of 2024 recruits while point guard Acaden Lewis is currently in the Class of 2025.
