‘Another L for Charlotte.’ Customers lament Gus’ Sir Beef restaurant closing.

“Fresh My Farm” will be no more.

On Monday, April 10, the owner of Gus’ Sir Beef, a Charlotte staple since 1969, announced the city’s first farm-to-table restaurant would permanently close.

Thrace Bacogeorge broke the news to customers with an impassioned letter on Facebook. “It’s not just me, it’s not just a landmark, it is not just my parents legacy, it’s a part of me. It’s a place rich of heart and memories. A place rich in friendships and family ties,” he wrote. “It transcended a humble dining experience and became a living history to people, myself and my siblings. It’s the legacy that Gus and Calliope Bacogeorge wanted it to be.”

Gus Bacogeorge opened the restaurant in 1969, and Thrace took over in 2000. It is one of Charlotte’s oldest restaurants.

With this news, Charlotte is saying goodbye to 54 years of memories of the restaurant, and customers took to social media to share some of their own favorite moments.

  • “The BEST family owned, Charlotte staple, fried squash restaurant will be no more. Thrace Bacogeorge and George Bacogeorge you both have been so generous and dedicated to your customers for years. Your parents would be/are so proud of you both and the efforts you made to carry-on their legacy,” Sara Klumpp Marvin wrote on Gus’ Sir Beef’s Facebook post.

  • “Their son has been trying to sustain this landmark, but is drowning at the costs of roof/building repairs, etc. They have been through a lot with losing both parents, the pandemic, his knee injury, now need help,” Jenny Lundin wrote on CharlotteFive’s Facebook post.

  • “First went there in the late ‘70’s when I met George Bacogeoge in Jr. High. Got to know that place and the family well over the years. Thanks for the great meals and memories Thrace, George (and of course, Gus)!” David Weber wrote on The Charlotte Observer’s Facebook post.

  • “Another L for Charlotte. All the local staples are gone, all the locals can’t afford to live there and no one seems to see the problem. Enjoy another brewery,” Lucid A wrote on CharlotteFive’s Instagram post.

  • “I wish I had heard more about this place before it closed! I drive by it almost daily but the outside was less than appealing (to say the least) so I never tried it. If only there was a story about this place to help it stay open vs waiting til they had to close their doors,” wrote Marissa Lynn. • “We need Remy Thurston to create a shirt popular enough to replace a whole roof this time,” Charlotte Development wrote on Twitter. (He’s referring to the Lang Van shirt Thurston designed.)

  • “1976 Busboy 47 years ago. Loved George and Wife. “Fresh my Farm”. Great people! Best squash in town back in the day!” Jay Hicks wrote on The Charlotte Observer’s Facebook post.

  • “My parents used to bring me here. I normally was ordered the spaghetti but every now and then they ordered for me manicotti. My dad loved their chicken livers and fried squash. My mother always ordered beef tips over rice! Oh the memories!” Jennifer Hopkins Powell wrote on The Charlotte Observer’s Facebook post.
