Another monument to the Russian poet Alexander Pushkin has been demolished in Kyiv, Kyiv City Councilor Dmitriy Belotserkovets has said, posting photos and videos of the removal of the statue on Facebook on Nov. 15.

"Pushkin is gone!” wrote Belotserkovets.

“Only at the end of the second year of the war did the Cabinet of Ministers realize that Pushkin is not a part of Ukrainian culture and officials agreed to the Kyiv initiative to demolish this monument. And for that, thank you. We're demolishing it!"

After the start of the full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine, the monument to Pushkin near Kyiv Polytechnic Institute park was repeatedly doused with paint and inscriptions were left on it demanding its demolition.

In May, a petition with such a call collected the required number of signatures. However, the Kyiv authorities stated that they could not demolish objects with the status of a national monument without a government decision.

Across Ukraine, as part of the decolonization process, dozens of monuments and busts of Pushkin and other Russian and Soviet figures have been demolished during the war.

Monuments to Pushkin have been prominent among those targeted because some of the works of the Russian poet glorify Russian imperialism.
