Another round of freezing rain in Portland metro possible on Thursday

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — When will the ice start melting? That’s the question on many Portland residents’ minds, and sadly the answer is turning out to be “not soon enough.”

The ice is melting quickly south of the Portland metro area; unfortunately, the colder temperatures are sticking in place for much of the Portland metro as the Gorge continues to funnel in arctic air.

As the rest of Oregon and parts of Southwest Washington get rain, freezing rain is possible Thursday evening for the Portland metro.

The icy conditions continue to keep much of the region in a gridlock with many of the roads still on the slick side.

Thursday morning, conditions are expected to stay icy for back roads and side streets, while they will be relatively clear on main thoroughfares.

Temperatures will be in the mid-to-upper 30s in the Portland metro area, but it could change quickly later on Thursday.

Thursday afternoon road conditions will not be as improved as much by then, and that’s when another round of freezing rain could arrive as cold winds from the Gorge pick up.

Temperatures will be projected to hover near or below freezing in Portland with the east winds. Frozen precipitation on the ground will help refreeze rain on the surface through Friday morning.
