Another ShopRite may be coming to South Plainfield

SOUTH PLAINFIELD – Another ShopRite may be coming to the borough.

South Plainfield Realty Development, owner of the Middlesex Mall, has applied to the borough Planning Board to renovate and enlarge a portion of the shopping center at the intersection of Stelton and Hadley roads for a new ShopRite.

The location is about a mile from another ShopRite at 1306 Centennial Ave. in Piscataway. In South Plainfield, there is another ShopRite at 3600 Park Ave. in the Golden Acres Shopping Center, about four miles from the Middlesex Mall. Those two stores are among the 39 ShopRites owned and operated by Saker ShopRites.

On March 31, South Plainfield Realty Development, which has the same address as the corporate offices of Saker ShopRites in Holmdel, acquired the mall from GBR Middlesex for $21.3 million, according to county clerk records.

South Plainfield Realty Development also proposes to modify the parking lot with the addition of about 32 parking spaces, add loading docks, an exit-only driveway onto Stelton Road, and additional wall signs.

The applicant is asking the Planning Board for preliminary and final major site plan approval, as well as bulk variance relief for the maximum number of wall signs and, if necessary, for the pre-existing conditions of maximum lot coverage and minimum number of parking spaces, both of which will be slightly improved by the proposed development but still in violation of the ordinance standards, according to a public notice.

The public hearing on the application is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 13 at Borough Hall, 2480 Plainfield Ave.
