Here’s another TikTok trend to avoid, experts say

“Dangerous” and “TikTok Trend” seem to go hand in hand. The latest one involves Vaseline and comes with a warning from opticians.

Trending with the hashtags #wateryeyehack and #vaselinehacks, users are posting videos of themselves dabbing Vaseline on the corners of their eyes to block tears from smearing their makeup.

This is especially useful, they say, in cold weather when the frigid air activates tear ducts, the New York Post reports.

One TikTok video posted by @yazmooremakeup has amassed over 230,000 views.

In the grand scheme of harmful TikTok trends, this one isn’t potentially life-threatening. But some experts are recommending against applying Vaseline near your eyes, nonetheless.

Moms are cracking eggs on kids’ heads on TikTok. Why?

Tina Patel, an optician at Feel Good Contacts, told the Daily Mail the Vaseline ‘hack’ raises your risk of developing milia and styes.

Milia are tiny cysts on the skin that appear milky-white or yellow. Styes are red sores or lumps that can develop near the edge of your eyelid.

“It is better to stay clear of Vaseline,” Patel says.

Mark Shelton, an optometrist, also urges caution.

“The eyelids contain meibomian glands which help to regulate the quality of the tears and blocking these glands can cause complications like styes and cysts or even infections,” Shelton said.
