A question and answer with Norwich Board of Education candidate Brandon Mansaku

Brandon Mansaku (R) is one of the candidates for the Norwich Board of Education. For Norwich, The Bulletin sent questionnaires to all candidates in the City Council and Board of Education elections. The answers here have been edited for conciseness and clarity.

Why are you running for the Board of Education?

I see the enormous potential that the city of Norwich has. A great city starts with great schools. It’s imperative we bring strong leadership into the Board of Education, particularly when leadership from its current majority is in short supply. Our city will soon build new schools, our school’s administration is under investigation, and teachers are leaving in higher numbers than ever. I have the background to help navigate the difficult decisions the Board of Education will face in the near future, and the energy to see it through.

What makes you stand out from other candidates?

I am a first generation immigrant with parents who emigrated from Albania. My parents imparted the profound importance of education, and it motivates me to advocate for all students. My degree in finance and experience in the field makes me well equipped to manage and scrutinize both the budgets for BOE generally and for the construction of our new schools. I am committed to holding quality construction as the top priority while ensuring the budget is maintained.

What do you think is the most important issue in the district and why?

Leadership in our schools is the most important issue in the district. We need a strong Superintendent and administration who allow all teachers and students to feel supported in our schools. Parents have the right to know what is happening in their children's schools, and transparency is something that was promised but not delivered by the current majority and leadership. Electing a new majority that selects new leadership is the only way to finally have that promise fulfilled.

How would you address the issue?

The proper due diligence is critical when making decisions such as contracts, hires, and budget overview. I am committed to asking the right questions, speaking with and speaking up for teachers, visiting our schools, and championing Norwich to our state representatives in Hartford. I will bring swift and fair enforcement against bullying through advocacy on the board to create a more positive environment for teachers, staff, and students.

What change would you like to see in Norwich Public Schools during your term, should you win?

The most crucial aspect of this transition lies in selecting the right individuals capable of replacing multiple administrative roles. With the right personnel in these pivotal positions, we will be able to realize the greatest change in our school system in the shortest amount of time.

Anything else you would like to add?

My parents are like many parents who immigrated to the United States to provide their children with the best opportunities possible. Everything my parents did for me instills a feeling of responsibility to help ensure that future generations understand the value of education and that our city supports them in every way possible.
