A native of Johnstown, Campagna earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and master’s degree in business administration from St. Francis University in Loretto.

"I was always interested in science, in particular microbiology. In college I took all the microbiology courses they offered," Campagna said in an email. "Clinical microbiology or the hospital was a great application for that education."

Career advancement

After he graduated from Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center’s medical technology program, Campagna began his career at Conemaugh.

"I began my healthcare career as a medical technologist in the clinical laboratory at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown in 1981. During my time in the microbiology lab, I worked with clinical specimens identifying the microorganisms causing infection and provided susceptibilities to antibiotics to the physicians for proper treatment of the infection. I also taught microbiology to our medical technology students and nursing students over my career at Memorial."

Campagna said during his 40 years at Memorial, he advanced in his career from medical technologist, to supervisor in microbiology, to laboratory director, to executive director responsible for a number of departments including the emergency room and imaging services and then to vice president of ancillary, post-acute and support services, which included the same areas as before plus facilities, construction, dietary, housekeeping, security, property management, rehab services, employee health office, wellness and emergency management.

“We’re excited to see what Meyersdale will achieve with Tony at the helm and to partner with him to create the next chapter in its future.”
