It’s fair to say that Anthony Hopkins has softened over the years—and on some level it makes sense that an actor who brought a cannibalistic serial killer so vividly to life would eventually need to find a way to zen out. These days, you can usually find Hopkins at home with his Hungarian rescue cat Niblo, painting in an incredible wardrobe of Hawaiian shirts or softly tickling the keys of a baby grand in the warm glow of a scented candle.

Which brings us to Hopkins’ newest hobby: those candles are, pleasantly enough, his own creations, part of a fragrance line he’s been developing in partnership with the nonprofit No Kid Hungry for the past few months. The newest release is a gender-neutral eau de parfum inspired by scents from his childhood garden in Wales called “AH.” (His initials, that is, not the sensation of satisfaction that might tingle up your spine upon hearing this news.)

Hopkins has actually been a scent aficionado since his Lecter days. “I use fragrance as a form of meditation,” he told GQ over Zoom from his studio last week, where he sat in a typically vibrant Hawaiian shirt in front of a painting featured prominently on his Amber Noir diffuser. His wife chimed in to report that seeing Hopkins’s place, where there were candles and flowers everywhere, prompting her to conclude he was “a keeper.”

Hopkins’ hope is to help the world reap the benefits he’s gotten from fragrance, which he finds brings him “a sense of peace.” Much like the peace that comes to anyone scrolling his Instagram feed to find him reciting T.S. Eliot in front of a cupboard of vintage teapots, this serenity is now widely accessible, available for $75 a bottle and unbound by the gender binary. “I’ve had a great life and I want to give something back,” Hopkins says. “Being an actor I use everything I can to brighten things up, whether that’s colorful fragrances or colorful shirts. I just want to do the best I can to help people.”
