Anti-Lockdown Demonstrators Take Part in Unauthorized Carnival in Marseille

Thousands of demonstrators dressed in various costumes assembled for an unauthorized carnival on March 21 in Marseille, France, to protest coronavirus restrictions limiting large gatherings.

Around 6,500 people, most of whom did not wear face coverings, marched on Sunday close to the Canebiere shopping district, according to reports.

Local media reported that police shut down the carnival later in the afternoon. At least nine people were arrested, reports said. Credit: Amine Lali via Storyful
