Antiques, science, concerts & lots of mud: 12 ideas for things to do on Cape Cod July 1-7

Truro Center for the Arts at Castle Hill starts celebrating its 50th anniversary in earnest with the opening of an all-year sculpture exhibit and its first concert of the summer. And there are other concerts to choose from: music series start this week in Harwich and Osterville; and a chamber music festival and concerts at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod continue.

Other choices are an arts and crafts show or an antiques show, talks on science and history, a bike ride, a maritime museum and exploring the Brewster mud through the natural history museum. For those looking for non-Fourth of July activities, read on:

Castle Hill opens sculpture garden, hosts concert for anniversary

The first big event celebrating the 50th anniversary of Truro Center for the Arts at Cstle Hill is the Friday opening of its sculpture garden, which will be on view for the next year. The outdoor exhibit will feature works by sculptors David Boyajian, who created a 10-foot stainless-steel sculpture with red birds in flight, and Justin Cifello's 100-foot sea monster out of invasive plants, as well as art by Laura Frazure, Susan Lyman, Kensuke Yamada, Nancy Rahnasto Osborne, Rob Silverstein, Tina Tarantal and Ellyn Weiss. Of the nine artists, five have been Castle Hill teachers and four past presidents. Del Filardi and his work We are also celebrating Del Filardi, who donated a larger-than-life turkey  that sits atop the driveway, will also be celebrated at the event. Maps will be provided for each of the sculpture’s location and a QR code to get more artist information.

The opening will include a concert by the Nadia Washington Quartet playing a blend of jazz, soul, R&B and World Music. Washington is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter, and will be playing with drummer Lee Fish, bassist Max Ridley and pianist Chase Morrin. Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets.

When: Friday, July 1; exhibit opens at 4 p.m., concert at 6 p.m.

Lots of choices at Brewster arts and crafts show

By the Bay will hold its 22nd Arts and Crafts show in Brewster, featuring work by Cape artists and artisans in oils, watercolors, pottery, photography, glass, leather and hand-crafted jewelry.

Peled again playing at chamber music festival

Internationally known cellist Amit Peled will return to Cape Cod to perform in the third concert of the Meeting House Chamber Music Festival's 48th season. Peled plays the 1733 Gofriller cello once played by the renowned Pablo Casals. Peled will play with festival founder and pianist Donald Enos. The series will continue July 5 with a concert of three quartets written across three centuries and in very different musical styles, featuring Enos with guest artists violinist Heather Goodchild Wade, violist Laura Manko Sahin, and cellist Bo Ericsson

New exhibits as Dennis Maritime Museum reopens

The Dennis Maritime Museum will open for the season with the first public showing of the recently acquired China Trade ship portrait of the bark Obed Baxter. Also new on display this year will be a collection of historic and modern Nantucket lightship baskets. Other exhibits include an examination of 19th-century Dennis women who went to sea with their husbands, and highlights of Dennis’ rich seafaring history and ship-building legacy. The museum also houses one of the local collections of Nobscussett Native American artifacts, the Benjamin Franklin Baker Medal of Honor exhibit, and an early classroom in homage to the building’s origins. Books on Dennis history are available for purchase.

When: opening day is 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 2; museum is then open 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays through Sept. 9

Take the kids in the mud

The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History will host a summer of its annual "Mudflat Mania" programs to take participants exploring on a hike to Cape Cod Bay.  This two-hour family program includes a walk of about 20 minutes out to the flats, an exploration of the space, plus the walk back. Nets, pails, water, sunscreen, guidebooks and other essentials can be brought or purchased through the Museum Shop. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable hiking or water shoes and a sunhat and bring a towel.

When: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 5 and 1:15 p.m., Friday, July 8. Participants are asked to arrive 20 minutes early.

Explore Harwich on rail trail ride

Connor O'Brien, Harwich Conservation Trust's director of land stewardship, will lead an educational bicycle ride through Harwich on the Cape Cod Rail Trail. This 10-mile round-trip ride is designed to give participants a chance to explore local hiking trails, native plant communities, and historic features of conservation destinations. Riders should bring a bike, helmet, water and other refreshments. There will be a stop at the Pizza Shark on Pleasant Lake Avenue before heading back to Brooks Park.

When: 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 6

Where: The bike trail will begin at Brooks Park in Harwich, traveling to the Herring River on the north edge of Bell's Neck Conservation Lands, riding past Island Pond Conservation Lands and the trust's William & Barbara Hacker Wildlife Sanctuary, and end at the trust's new Hinckleys Pond-Herring River Headwaters Preserve.

Admission: $15 per person. Space is limited so advance reservation is required.

Highfield Hall & Gardens presents a new five-part lecture series, featuring area scientists from local science institutions discussing "Biodiversity is the Key to Life on Earth," highlighting different environments around the world. A former senior program officer of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility of Copenhagen in Denmark, Remsen will discuss the Cape’s marine ecosystem, marine biogeography of the Cape and more.

The Cape Cod Antique Dealers Association will host its first Summer Sandwich Antiques Show. Over 30 dealers from across the Cape and throughout New England will present a wide array of 18th-, 19th-, and early 20th-century antiques. Collectors and buyers will find American country furniture, garden antiques, tools, pottery, glassware, paintings, jewelry, books, cooking items, baskets, decorative items and more. Lunch will be served throughout the afternoon.

The Summer Concert Series at Osterville Village Library will kick off with Sarah Swain & The Oh Boys. The show will feature lead singer Sarah Swain, along with Ron Siegel, Mark Usher and Liam Hogg. Listeners are advised to arrive early for a good spot, and bring their own blanket or chairs. Other entertainers in the five-week series will be the Cape Cod Conservatory’s Big Band (July 14), the Mike Dumas Band (July 21), the Moonlighters (July 28), and Cape Cod Jazz (Aug. 4).

Cranfest In the Courtyard concert series returns

Presented by the Harwich Cranberry Arts & Music Festival, the Cranfest in the Courtyard Concert series will include music on Thursday nights over five weeks. kicks off for the next five weeks. Offering what organizers call "world-class music in a small-town setting," the opening night show will feature Celtic musical group Runa. The award-winning group specializes in combining traditional music of Ireland and Scotland, with modern folk and jazz. Audiences are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets. Beverages will be available for sale. Upcoming shows will be: July 14, Don White; July 21, Lucy Kaplansky; July 28, Mary Gauthier; and Aug. 4, Crys Matthews.
