Are ants invading your house? Here’s how to keep them out in Mississippi

“The ants go marching one by one, hurrah, hurrah.”

This song is certainly true. The tiny insects do come marching in, one by one. But where they end up could be an issue — or an annoyance — to Mississippi homeowners.

If you’ve been seeing ants in your home, you’re not the only one and chances are, there are more coming.

Why are they active right now?

Simply put: they are looking for food and shelter before the weather turns cold.

What kind of ants are they & why do they come in?

Most commonly, they are Argentine ants or what we refer to as “sugar ants,” and just like any other insect, they are looking for food and shelter, especially when the season changes to cooler weather.

“For one thing, all ant species will seek out food sources to eat, and they will get into everything from pet food to bits of scraps left behind after a meal. They all also need water sources to live. Some ants are more likely to invade indoors than others, but they can all be drawn in by access to food and water,” according to Havard Pest Control in Hattiesburg.

Although the ants are mostly seen in moist areas such as the bathroom or in the kitchen, they can live deep in your home in places such as wall voids, behind insulation, under house siding or shingles, behind brick veneer, in potted plants and under carpeting or other flooring.

How to protect your home and keep ants away

Here are some tips to keep the little pests from marching in your Mississippi home this fall and winter from Havard Pest Control.

  • Clear up humidity problems by fixing leaky plumbing and using dehumidifiers.

  • Remove access to food sources by storing pet food indoors and cleaning up food and drink spills right away.

  • Seal up access to the structure by fixing broken screens in doors and windows. You can also seal holes in the walls and foundation using caulk or foam products.

  • Call for backup. Contact your local pest control company for the best results.
