Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s (D., N.Y.) belief that exposure to gas stoves “is linked to reduced cognitive performance” hasn’t stopped her from using one regularly in her home.

Multiple videos and images recorded in the New York Democrat’s kitchen and posted to social media show that she has a standard gas range in her apartment.

In one video posted to Instagram, Ocasio-Cortez can be seen bending over to dunk her face in a bowl of ice water with a gas stove clearly visible behind her.

Ocasio-Cortez immediately endorsed the idea of doing away with gas stoves after a Consumer Safety Commissioner told Bloomberg News that a ban on the appliance was on the table due to its alleged health effects.

Social-media critics were quick to remind Ocasio-Cortez that she uses a gas stove.

The Safety Commission quickly backtracked after the Bloomberg report, assuring Americans that a gas-stove-ban was not being considered, though the commission still plans to hold a public comment period on the alleged dangers of gas stoves.

In a thread following her original Twitter post suggesting gas stoves caused brain damage, followers asked Ocasio-Cortez if any government assistance would be available for those who wished to ditch gas stoves.

“The way we are handling it in NYC isn’t to force people to switch what they already have. Folks can keep their appliances, and new buildings in NYC will have gas-free stoves,” Ocasio-Cortez responded to one commenter.

The New York representative also added: “Keep an eye out for tax credits/rebates for gas-free appliances that may roll out this year. The Inflation Reduction Act that was passed last year contains funding for a lot of different climate related rebates for people (not just EVs!)”

Ocasio-Cortez’s comments come after New York’s Democratic governor Kathy Hochul gave a state-of-the-state address Tuesday, during which she outlined a plan to eliminate gas heating and appliances from all construction projects by 2030.

Stratis Morfogen, a Brooklyn-based restauranteur, expressed his frustration at Hochul’s proposal.

“We lose 40% productivity by using electric…If they inquire with small business owners, I’ll give them three pieces of advice, get a stronger filtration system, get a hood system that works and basically train your staff how to maintain it,” Morfogen told Tucker Carlson on Fox News.

Ocasio-Cortez’s office didn’t respond to a request for comment by press time.
