A$AP Rocky Is On a Shorts-Suit Hot Streak

With the assault trial he faced in Sweden behind him, A$AP Rocky appears to be slowly returning to business as usual. And Rocky’s ordinary life? Well, it includes a healthy dose of jet-setting around the globe from one high-profile event to another and wearing dope-as-hell menswear along the way. In particular, that has meant the hip-hop star has shown up to both Rihanna’s Diamond Ball and the Prada show at Milan Fashion Week with the same swervy style move: the shorts-suit.

Last week, at Rihanna's blockbuster New York Fashion Week gala, Rocky showed up at the star-studded event dressed in a full head-to-toe look from Raf Simons' spring 2020 collection. He paired a wide-shouldered blazer (a Simons signature) with printed dress shorts and glossy black boots. It was a classic Rocky fit: bold, precise, and wild, all at once. Then, just the other day, the ultra-stylish rapper popped up in Milan for fashion week in yet another shorts-suit—this time it was Prada. Rocky is no stranger to the beloved Italian label and has worn custom Prada on tour for the majority of the year. However, those looks have skewed loud: nylon track pants covered in flames, neon-yellow utility vests, and shiny orange camp-collared shirts. This time, his Prada outfit aimed for low-key minimalism: a navy blazer with matching pleated shorts and a pair of classic dress shoes.

On Rocky, the shorts-suit looks pretty damn effortless. (He tends to pull off the most advanced-level looks without breaking a sweat.) It's hard to remember that when Pharrell championed the unconventional look five years ago, it was met with resistance and the entire fashion world seemed to be up in arms about it. Rocky makes the style move feel like no big deal—just another killer outfit in his arsenal. It's nice to see Rocky return to form: breaking sartorial rules and looking wildly stylish while doing it.
