Apartment building fire on South 8th Street displaces seven people

A fire at an apartment building displaced six adults and a child Wednesday morning.

Springfield Fire Department Division Chief Ed Canny said firefighters were called to a building in the 900 block of South 8th Street at about 10:12 a.m. Smoke and fire were spotted coming from the front of the building on the third floor when they arrived. The building has five apartments.

Firefighters worked to get people out of the five-apartment building and had the fire contained within 30 minutes.

One person was hospitalized as a precaution with minor injuries. No one was seriously injured, but structural damage to the third floor forced the residents to find temporary housing. The American Red Cross is providing assistance.

Springfield fire investigators are searching for the cause of the blaze.
