Apartment fire may have been intentionally set

Local officials continue to investigate a fire that may have been intentionally set.

Cambridge police and fire departments responded to a fire on the second floor of a downtown apartment building at 916 Wheeling Ave. Tuesday night.

Initial reports regarding the fire indicated two children were in the building.

Officers entered the building to search for the missing children and found the second floor going to the back stairway to the third floor on fire, according to police report. Officers retrieved a fire extinguisher from the patrol car and extinguished the fire . They continued to search the second and third floors for the children, who were later found outside.

Mike Stelfox, an investigator with Ohio State Fire Marshal's Office, said the cause of the fire was a human act and possible arson.

Lt. Tim Ferguson with Cambridge Police Department said samples were taken from the scene and sent to the lab for investigation.

Officers on the scene reported seeing a person running away from the building. A male at the scenetold officers the fleeing individual had sent text messages saying he was about to do something stupid, according to officers.

Officers located the man who was questioned at the police station and released.

The structure serves as a mix use building, housing apartments and businesses such as Techniques of Dance Studio, Ken's Certified Car Repair, Elite Exotics and Feeders and Move (Mid Ohio Valley Employment).

Fire Chief Jeff Deeks said no injuries were sustained during the fire.
