An Apartment Inside the English Country House From Four Weddings and a Funeral Is Listed for $3.1 Million

A ground-floor apartment in the stately English country house where Andie MacDowell’s Four Weddings and a Funeral character, Carrie, married her Scottish husband Hamish (played by the late Corin Redgrave) is currently on the market for $3.1 million. The brick-and-ivy-covered house, known as the Albury Park Mansion, is located near Guildford, Surrey, about 35 miles southwest of London, and parts of it date all the way back to the 16th century. (In the 1994 film, it should be noted, the fictional wedding takes place in the Scottish Highlands.)

Other buildings on the same estate, including St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church, were also featured in the film, and actually date even further back, to the 10th century. The available apartment is one of several luxury units that billionaire property developers Nick and Christian Candy constructed within the estate’s main mansion some 12 years ago, and it brings together Old World charm and modern amenities. According to People magazine, the home includes four bedrooms, a study, and a drawing room, as well as a basement floor replete with a cavern-style bar, a spa, a sauna, a gym, and a wine cellar.

“What’s great is the combination of the character and the history with the luxury, modern conveniences, and appliances,” Lee Shipp of real estate firm Savills tells People. “You have the benefit of old and new coming together in harmony. It’s a picture postcard of an English country house.”

Architectural details of note include 63 candlestick chimneys that dot the roof to create a unique silhouette, thanks to designer Augustus Pugin, who also happened to design the Houses of Parliament in London. The new owners of the ground-floor apartment will also enjoy the surrounding lush Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, plus a private terrace that overlooks the landscaped gardens of the estate.
