Nintendo’s policy to prioritise innovation over technical power has generally seen them well over the past decade, but it means their consoles often miss out on triple-A titans.

One such game is Red Dead Redemption 2, the open-world phenomenon that pushes the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One to their absolute limits.

While nobody truly expected a title of such size and scope to make its way to the Switch, Nintendo fans would have no doubt been happy with a scaled-down version of the game.

When asked why Rockstar never developed a Red Dead Switch title, President of Nintendo America Reggie Fils-Aimé told The Hollywood Reporter that it was purely down to timing, and not technical limitations.

“Absolutely. We’d love for it to be there”, the Nintendo executive said.

“But again - and this is where there needs to be an understanding of just the development process - Red Dead has been in development for years, time that predated any communication of Nintendo Switch.

“So, from the developer’s mentality, they need to move forward and finish the game they’ve been working on and then be in a position to look at other opportunities. Any game from a key third-party that’s coming out now, typically that development started well before any conversations about Nintendo Switch.

“What happens moving forward? We’ll see. But that’s how you wind up with a situation with Red Dead not being available on our platform.”
