The colour white has long been associated with blushing brides, wonderfully gauche P. Diddy parties and the conservative courts of Wimbledon. None such events lend themselves to the everyday.

But white is breaking free from those constraints. Now, it's a colour easily embraced in summer. You can thank the humble casual jacket for that.

Pioneered by both Jake Gyllenhaal and Nick Jonas of late, the white lightweight jacket can present itself in many shapes. For the former, it was a worker style with a ribbed hem in a brilliant shade; the latter, something heavier in a hue closer to ecru.

All of which is highly impractical, of course. Summer, in all of its heightened excess and lager-fuelled debauchery, attracts scuffs, marks and stains. But the pros are plentiful. For one, it's a way to go lighter without delving into high impact Cuban collars. They're not for everyone (though they should be).

Better yet, they go with most things in your arsenal. Like Jonas and Gyllenhaal, enlist darks and neutrals in tandem to ground the halo up-top. Or, alternatively, white out like you're about to shower millions upon a prospective presidential candidate in the Hamptons.

The biggest benefit however, is the volume in choice. The ultimate summer jacket isn't confined to one particular style, and you can thank an array of stakeholders that include Officine Générale, Carhartt, Our Legacy and every brand in between. This concept, after all, is fluid: simply opt for a creamier section of the colour wheel, stick to something classic, structured but also casual, and you're pretty much there.

Here's the best of the lot.
