'Westworld' Season 2 Episode 8 Spoilers: Who Died in Last Night's Episode?

Your favorite character might not make it to Season 3.

Last week, two major Westworld characters took some serious damage. At the time, I was pretty certain that both Maeve and the Man in Black would be just fine, but after watching Season 2 Episode 8 (“Kiksuya”) I’m not so sure.

Here’s where Maeve and The Man in Black both stand at the end Westworld Season 2 Episode 8, and where they’re probably headed as the season starts to wrap up.

Spoilers for Westworld Season 2 Episode 8 follow

Westworld Season 2 Episode 8 Spoilers: What Happened to Maeve?

Episode 7 ended with Maeve shot full of bullets and lying on a gurney while Lee Sizemore hid nearby. It seemed like a safe bet that Lee would be able to bring her back to life, but unfortunately that wasn’t exactly the case.

Instead, he wheeled Maeve’s dying body to a Westworld technician who only agreed to look at her after Lee explained that she’s somehow figured out how to control other Hosts with her mind. In a surprise twist, the technician copies whatever special code is running on Maeve and leaves her original body to presumably power down.

We don’t get a definitive answer on whether Maeve will survive, but the final decision will be made by Delos executive Charlotte Hale. That doesn’t sound great, but at least she’s not dead yet.

Westworld Season 2 Episode 8 Spoilers: What Happened to The Man in Black (aka William)?

As for William, he might be in better shape than Maeve, but he’s not out of the woods either. The Man in Black initially gets rescued by the Ghost Nation, but they don’t do much to actually help heal him. Then, near the end of the episode, William’s daughter shows up to rescue dear old dad.

Again, it’s unclear exactly how this will play out. The Man in Black looked like he was just minutes from death in this week’s episode, but based on the teaser for Episode 9 it’s pretty clear he’s got a little life left in him. However, that might just be enough to offer up some backstory and finally make amends with his daughter before we finally say goodbye to Ed Harris.

So where does that leave us?

If I had to guess, I’d say that both characters will die, but with a catch. At this point, Maeve is basically one with the entire Host system (she can even telepathically communicate with other Hosts across the park), so even if her body dies her mind could potentially upload itself into that Host mesh network

As for The Man in Black. Things don’t look great, but if he really is a Host (which I still think he might be) then death isn’t totally permanent either. He could be uploaded into another fresh Host, or just piggyback on someone else’s brain like Ford did to Bernard.

With just two episodes left, you can probably expect at least one or two more major deaths as Westworld Season 2 comes to an end. In the meantime, stay tuned for plenty more analysis this week as we continue to unpack Episode 8.
