Note: this article contains minor spoilers for Aquaman.

For those of you who've already managed to catch Aquaman in the cinemas, you'll probably have noticed that the wider DC Universe – now named Worlds of DC – doesn't actually come into things at all.

That means that there's no mention of Arthur Curry's adventures with Batman, Wonder Woman and co, and absolutely no superhero cameos or other nods within this wet and wild blockbuster.

But, considering Jason Momoa's titular Atlantean King has appeared in two movies before his standalone venture, why didn't his Justice League or Batman v Superman appearances get a shout out?

Well, according to Aquaman director James Wan, it's all to do with giving Aquaman the time in the spotlight he hasn't exactly had before.

"We've seen him in other films, but I really wanted to tell a standalone story," Wan explained to Den of Geek.

"People ask me why and I'm like: 'Listen, you guys have so many movies to do with Superman and Batman and all that already. Let's give this guy his time in the limelight'.

"This is his opportunity. He's never had the chance before. Let's just let it be his film, and get that right. And maybe then we can have fun mixing him up with the other characters."

Wan continued to add that it was his choice to make Aquaman a "very self-contained film".

"It's ultimately about the journey that he goes on," he continued. "I didn't want to jam the other characters in just for the sake of jamming characters in there."

And it seems to be a move that's paying off too, as Aquaman has already managed to break a record previously held by Avengers: Infinity War – and the reviews have been some of Worlds of DC's best in a while too.

Aquaman is in UK cinemas now and is released in US cinemas on December 21.
