Apostolic nuncio, Texas bishops celebrate Diocese of Corpus Christi's 110th anniversary

Bishops from around Texas welcomed Archbishop Christophe Pierre, the Vatican's apostolic nuncio to the United States, to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the Diocese of Corpus Christi on Friday.

The Diocese of Corpus Christi was founded in 1912 after having been the Vicariate Apostolic of Brownsville since 1874. Paul Joseph Nussbaum of Philadelphia was named its first bishop.

Bishop Michael Mulvey was installed as the eighth bishop of the diocese in 2010. Mulvey led the opening mass for the Eucharistic Congress conference.

"We are thankful and we commemorate the 110th anniversary of our local church, the Diocese of Corpus Christi," Mulvey said. "With heartfelt thanks to all of you who have joined us to celebrate God's eternal gift to us, Eucharist, the body of Christ."

A Eucharistic Congress is a religious gathering held to increase faith in the Blessed Sacrament and promote Eucharistic devotion. The conference includes youth events and focuses on topics including "The Eucharist and the Mission" and "Living a Eucharistic Marriage and Family Life."

Pierre, a direct representative of Pope Francis, gave a sermon at the Corpus Christi Cathedral. Pierre is a keynote speaker for the conference, as well as Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller from the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

"I thank all the priests gathered here today for the service of God and his holy people," Pierre said.
