New app for groceries on the South Shore could save you money − and reduce waste
There's a new way to save on groceries on the South Shore.
Stop & Shop has added South Shore locations to its Flashfood app, which offers some groceries at 50% off.
Don't mind an 18-egg carton with only 17 eggs? Meat that you need to cook or freeze within a few days due to the expiration date? A brown bag of produce you haven't seen in person? A dented can? Then this might be for you. You shop on the free app and then pick up your groceries at a Stop & Shop store.
It's unlikely you can get your full week of groceries this way if you like a well-rounded diet. The food items can be a little random, and it is just one freezer and one refrigerator of food in most stores.
But it doesn't mean there aren't deals to be found. A Patriot Ledger staffer recently found four kinds of packaged tomatoes for a total of $5 and four lamb chops for $9.
Flashfood CEO Josh Domingues created the app to address food waste and food insecurity. The waste ends up in landfills and creates harmful emissions.
Flashfood is in nearly 300 Stop & Shop stores across Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island. South Shore locations include Quincy, Abington, Braintree, Halifax, Hingham, Kingston, Norwell, Pembroke, Weymouth and Whitman.
The Flashfood/Stop & Shop partnership has diverted more than 430,000 pounds of food from landfills, preventing 827,000 pounds of carbon dioxide equivalent from being released into the atmosphere, a spokeswoman said.
